Hi Diana,
Just stopping by after our conversation at camera club. I really like the sense of depth you got in this image. I definitely agree with you that the image is better without the person at the bottom of the staircase. Based on what Donna said above, I tried a vertical crop. It's a whole other photo, but that's the fun of Photoshop: we can play around and find more than we thought we had. I also tried the vertical in black and white, but I think it loses one of the most striking features of your image, which is the way the railings highlight the shapes as the staircase descends. I included the color vertical just for fun (this program only takes one thumbnail so I couldn't show the black & white), but as I said, they're a totally different idea, and in no way take away from the validity of your original interpretation. Very nice work! |

I have to smile -- "a log with fungus on it" really doesn't sound at all appealing does it. I have always been amazed by the variety and intricacy of things like mushrooms and other fungi, mosses, lichens, and other things that mostly escape notice on the forest floor. Especially when you get very close, often with a 10-power magnifying lens, the structures are truly remarkable. Last fall I had the privilege of taking a class from an expert in the field, and on a hike of just a few hours we discovered hundreds of different fungi of all sizes, shapes, and colors. My photo this month is a rather mundane example of what's out there to be found by turning over a rotting log or looking under a leaf. For me they're as magical as an entire botanical garden full of flowers. |

I like the way the colors in the reflections and fireworks and lights on the buildings on the right reflect the color of his shirt. It makes the whole thing hang together. I did some research on the planetarium pier location to figure out the lay of the land, because I am confused by the fact that the water is ripply and then seems to go flat in the foreground. I finally figured out that the flat area is the actual pier, which must have been wet as well to continue the reflections from the lake. Anyway, very nice photo. |

I think you definitely conveyed why she gets compliments for her eyes. And your technique with the flash certainly did a nice job or casting a soft light over the scene and leaving just enough shadows for definition. I'm guessing you cropped because your aspect ratio is square. I sort of wish there were a bit of the person holding her. On the other hand the square crop does make her the undeniable center of attention. And keeping just the smile gives a hint to how happy she makes people. |

I like the crop and the way the colors of the surroundings are positioned in just such a way as to help his clothing, face, and hat stand out against the background. My eye kept going to the bright spot of sky in the upper right. I took it into Photoshop and did a quick clone of some branches to bring that area into harmony with the rest of the background. I think it helps without really changing the story. |

You have such a good eye for fun things. These little critters are so cute they make me smile just to see them. It was also fun to look at the original and pick out just where you cropped to get your trio. They are nice and sharp, and somehow the treatment highlights the translucency of their bodies. Well seen and well done. |

Hi Ruth,
As for sending the original along, you did the right thing: just attach it to the same email when you send your photo. The only thing to remember is that you must resize the original so that it's file size is not larger than 1 MB. I did that for you for this one, but it's best if the maker does it before sending it. All for now, I'll send my comments later. |
