Eric - I really like your crop. I had cropped out a lot all around, but I still tend to leave more than one subject in my photos. I really liked the contrast of the white flowers in the lower left, but the effect of the rose bud is so much better without them. |

I didn't notice the branch on the right until Marla pointed it out, but I agree it doesn't add anything and removing it would add to the feeling that the soldier is gazing off past the flag into the future. |

I really like the image, especially the lighting, but it appears very small as posted. It was sized at 184x246 pixels, image size 39KB. If you wish to resubmit it at a larger size I can replace the image for you. |

I like the colors. They seem to clearly indicate fall aspen trees, which would be appropriate to September in Rocky Mtn. I get the feeling that there was a screen of grass between you and the trees, partly due to the effect of adding the white to indicate the tree trunks. That also distinguished the crowns of the trees from the trunks, giving me a feeling of depth in the scene. Without that addition I think this would have been just a blur of color. |

You did a nice job of removing the parking lot--I think that really would have taken away from the effect. At first I wondered why you left the larger bird entering from the right, but I think it adds to the dynamic feeling of the activity going on. |

I really enjoy the intensity of the colors and the lighting in this scene. Paired with the story of the abandoned college, I think it would be a great addition to a display about Maryland. Technically, I think I would experiment with cloning out the branches that are in front of the structure, especially those at the very top. The others may add to the feeling of being out-of-doors, but the forked ones a the top are a distraction for me. |

I can see why you selected this image. It has a powerful feeling. I'm on the fence about whether the soft faded image of the flag adds to the feeling. At first I wanted to add a little punch to the colors, but then had second thoughts. If it was possible, I would have stepped a bit to the left to get all of the hood (around the neck) in the frame, which would also have changed the angle from the soldier to the flag to enhance the effect that he is looking at the flag he was fighting for. Also a step back might have made it possible to get the top of the helmet. Of course you may have wanted to crop into the figure to give a more "universal" feeling to the scene. -- One can never know the heart of the artist. |
