I really like the idea of contrasting the sizes. I think you did just the right thing to capture a bit of your daughter's denim shorts; it lets me understand even more about the relative heights. I can see why you wanted the focus on the ball, but I'd like the rest of the photo to be a bit more in focus. One way to do that might be to increase the f-stop and then use a vignette or a radial gradient to soften the photo as the eye moves away from your chosen center of focus. |

After reading your description, my first thought was "That's a lot of smoke!" I definitely agree that any color that would have been in the original would have been a distraction from the layering and the gradation of tones in the image. I especially like the composition with the mountain off center and almost like a ghost in the background. I played with this image using the threshold layer (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Threshold in Elements) and enjoyed watching the different grays show each layer of trees coming and going as I moved the slider back and forth. It seems to me a very good example of the zone concept used by Ansel Adams (just without true white and true black). |

To answer your question, I opened it in Photoshop Elements and put a "Threshold" layer on it. Then I took the slider all the way to the left (dark) end of the histogram, and found only tiny areas under the tree at the left and under the rocks at the left to be completely black. That indicates everything else is in good exposure. For me the photo is exposed very well, and the subject is very interesting, especially the reflections of the shore and fishing line.
To get to the Threshold layer in Elements or in Photoshop, go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Threshold... then click OK. Other software would probably have similar functions. |

I really enjoy this view of life in Vietnam. Normally I might say the background is busy, but in this case for me it fills in the details of the surroundings and makes the image richer. The only thing I would like to see is a little more light on the face of the lady in the foreground. |

I think this is a very interesting concept. Both photos seem well-exposed and in good focus. I would like to see a little more blending where the face meets the crystal ball; or maybe even reducing the opacity of the face layer so the texture of the crystal ball is slightly visible which might give it the impression of seeing him inside of the crystal ball. |
