Lisa - Hawaii seems like such a fantastic place for a photo workshop. Someday I will have to get there.. This is a dramatic shot. Clearly you worked hard to get the image and you captured a dramatic city scape moment. Because of the wide angle lens and the low perspective, lens distortion on the edges of your frame becomes an issue. Your primary subjects are centered. We are often told to exclude features that aren't critical to the image - keep it simple. I'd crop the right and left side of this image to exclude the small palm tree on the left and the shorter buildings at the point of the water drop on the right. When shooting night scenes consider changing your white balance. Experiment with different Kelvin settings to change the color cast of your night time images. It sounds like you're having quite the adventure... |

Punkaj - First of all welcome to the group! This is a neat shot. It shows the juxtaposition of the crowded highway on the left and the empty lanes on the right half of the frame. I like the centered composition. I think that juxtaposition could be made stronger by cropping the top 1/4 to 1/3 to show completely empty lanes on the right side. An even more interesting subject relationship might have bee just one car in the right lane. Could you have waited for the next car to come into frame at the bottom right and allowed the cars at the top right exit the frame..? I like the black and white. I'd like to see more detail though. Slightly more exposure in the shadows might help. |

Wow! I have difficulty with this image. You know me Kieu-Hanh, I am a literalist and most comfortable with symmetry and balance. :-) The objects are certainly invisible. My eye is overwhelmed by the color, and detail. This is a shot that requires me to get past the initial shock, calm down and begin to look deeper at the various elements. The shelving and plate / clock provide interest and a unique basic hidden subject. I look at this an try to explore patterns and relationships between the circles of color and lines. I can't provide a critique on your image creation. I don't see areas for improvement in exposure or composition. I assume the shelving and plate / clock are offset from center within the exhibit itself. This is a piece of art I would need to sit and contemplate for a while.... |

This is a good story telling image. For me it starts with the tire marks at the bottom center and draws my eye upward to the bicyclists . The water line takes me from right to left into the mountain where I travel across the top of the frame to the center right side of the image. The seagull looking into the frame brings me back to the center. The human element tells the story of exploration and fun. The red jacket on the child conveys energy and excitement - joy in the experience. I wonder what the adult is thinking as he gazes off into the mist. This image is well balanced and composed using layers and thirds and symmetry. The position of the child on the bike also leverages the golden spiral in composition. The exposure is well done. Lighting color and shading are all well balanced to compliment one another. My only criticism is the negative space of the sand in the bottom left corner. I wouldn't crop it out but perhaps reducing exposure in the bottom left and top right corners of the frame might help. |

Randy - this is an interesting image. I feel like I'm standing in the boat house. I like the leading lines and symmetry. The light and shading work well together. This is a hard shot to get proper exposure. You've done a good job of capturing detail in the shadows and not over exposing the bright areas of the water. My only suggestion would be to change perspective slightly and move your camera to the right in order to center the opening of the boat house in the frame. |

Peter - Nice shot ... I am the admin of group #3. I was to Chena quite a few years ago and unfortunately didn't get a shot like this.. I like the leading line of the snowbank taking the viewer's ey back to the Ice Hotel and up into the aurora. If you enjoy shooting the aurora another great location in AK is up the Dalton Highway to a small town called Wiseman and Cold Foot. Not quite as comfy as Chena but the views and mountain scapes are spectacular. |
