This is a tough scenario. The two rowers in the front are distracting. The rower with her hands in the air is very excited. It would be nice to concentrate the viewer on her. Also the rower in front and to the left. There are others that are excited toward the back of the boat. Perhaps if you had cropped out the first two and raised the camera to capture the captain (person in back with yellow shirt) you would also capture the boat in the background. Perhaps this may have made a better composition and told the story that this was a competition. Please photograph this event again. I'd love to see more photos! |

I am going to have to beg off on this one. I do not do portraiture and am totally unqualified to comment. |

Like the other commenters ... this is a really great photo. Since it is very much monochrome already, you might try as a B&W. |

Wonderful photo, one to be cherished as she grows up. The DOF throwing everything out of focus except your granddaughter really concentrates the viewers eye on her. And the way she is looking at you, and you captured it perfectly, is precious. |

A very interesting photo, the sort of thing that I would like to do, but without resorting to sky replacement. Along that line of thought, and in agreement that separation between the sky and the rock is not all that evident, another approach would be star trails. Just a thought. |

Thanks for your suggestion. I think what you are commenting on is the effect I obtained with the dehaze filter. I found that adding a bit of dehaze darkened the ice creating contrast between the skaters and the ice. The result was that the skaters seemed to "pop" off the page, really putting the emphasis on them. |
