The first hurdle that I had to overcome when I first started doing focus stacking was that no method is perfect. There will likely be artifacts that you will have to repair in Photoshop. For example, when the stamens of a tiger lily cross each other, one being closer to the camera than the other, the rendering of the crossing will likely need to be fixed with the clone tool.
Helicon Focus, Zerene Stacker and Photoshop are all tools that can do the job. HF provides four separate algorithms: weighted average, depth map, pyramid and a legacy method. I typically will try each and use the one that gives me the least amount of artifacts. Usually HF does a good job without artifacts.
The D810 does not have focus stacking built in, so I use Helicon Remote to control my camera. There are a few things that I like about HR. It is available for your phone, but I like the large screen of my tablet. You set the near and far focus points, then HR will compute the number of images to be taken based on the f-stop that you have set. It takes the guess work out of taking the images. Best practice is to take more images than you need by setting the near point closer than required and the far point further than required. It seemed like there were always parts of the image that I had missed. And it is easy to indicate to HF to not use images when it renders the stack.
I am quite happy with the products, but the company is located in Kharkiv, Ukraine so I don't know what the future of Helicon Soft may be.

Thank you for sharing this photo. Although I like the photo and with the chains, I also see many smaller scenes in the photo. I hope you explored them too. |

Not exactly sure what you mean with "tailoring can be highlighted". |

I love how you have a few grass seeds (not sure of the term to use here) in very sharp focus. These really attract my eye. If you had deeper DOF I don't think you would have the same effect. What if ... you were to crop in closer to the center? |

I agree with Josh that the red and dark line need to go. You did a nice job catching "many faces". I recently did a shoot for a local city with the mayor giving his annual State of the City address. One of the most difficult things to do is to get a nice expression on someone's face while they are talking, i.e. giving the speech. If you notice the top two photos and the second row on the left aren't all that complimentary. The bottom row center is GREAT!! Advice that I recently had was to use burst shooting and take a LOT of photos.
I would like to see another attempt. Elections aren't for a while yet, so you will probably have more opportunities. Please share them! |

Very cute photo. I am not sure the colorful liquid in the cup works. I think something more in tune with the color of coffee would tell a better story. Well done! |

Very nice Sylvia - Antelope Canyon is definitely a place that I would like to visit. I do not find the sky distracting, but the highlight on the right side is distracting. I am not sure how you are post processing your images. If Lightroom, you might try just reducing the highlight slider. |
