What if I clone out the tree on the right? I think it gives a better sense of the open space of the prairie. The image was almost too symmetrical with the tree there especially if I cropped to the right of the tree. I almost would have to crop the entire tree out.
I just wish I was a bit more skillful at using the clone tool. |

That is so very true!! A very interesting article in a recent PSA Journal was to not give up on a photo just because one judge doesn't like it. Enter it again in another competition with a different set of judges.
For example, a common thing that we see around here is to vignette or not. Some judges hate it, others like it. So what to do? Do what it is that you like.
Bottom line on this image? It is a great image and I can see it hanging on someones wall! Well done! |

I agree that the second image is better than the one you originally posted. The first one seems rather cluttered and does not really give me the feeling of action. The second one though does a much better job of giving a feeling of the action involved.
Suggestion for this summer ... try a variety of shutter speeds. Slow shutter speeds will result in a blurry photo, but may give a better impression of motion. I have done a fair amount of photographing auto races. A fast shutter speed makes the car look like it is just parked on the race course, while a slower shutter speed is better at depicting the action. I would expect the same to be true of white water kayaking. Please share with us some more white water action photos!
I have long wanted to photograph the same type of subject. You have given me some motivation to do so :-) |

I too like this photo. I do think it looked a bit flat to me, so I have adjusted the exposure, brightness and contrast.
In addition to our regular meeting, our camera club also has a "Focus Night" which allows us time to dive deeper into a subject. This month members are submitting their edited photos. Then a professional photographer (was our monthly judge) will see what improvements he can do to the photos. My wife and saw him do this previously and we were amazed at how much better the photos looked after just a bit of additional tweaking. Anyway, this is what I attempted to do with this photo.

To a certain extent I have to agree with Graham. The cell phone seems out of place with the environment. I would like to have seen a photo of the young man (I love his expression) and what I believe to be his younger sister.
Other than those type of things, I find the photo technically well done. |

Very well done! Graham pretty much hit everything. You did an excellent job with your own creative view on the topic. |
