It sounds like when I get that truly awesome photo of the Northern Lights I need to post it here :-) This photo is not what I am trying to achieve. What I want is ribbons and pillars of red and purple dancing across the entire sky. When I succeed at that you will surely know :-)

The dark trails that you refer to are probably "stuff" in the water. The water is very shallow, so whether it be a log or pile of dirt, it probably will extend above the surface of the water. That's my guess as to what you are seeing.

I think an image that is not so tightly cropped, i.e. shorter focal length, would give the viewer a better idea of what he is really looking at. Having not been there, I don't really know what I am seeing. I feel like I am missing some of the story. |

Thanks Tom. I just got back from the same location for another attempt at seeing/photographing the aurora. We went up early, found a few things to photograph, got some nice sunset images (at least I hope they are nice; I haven't had time to download them yet) and then waited for Lady Aurora, but she was a no show. :-( About 1am we decided to call it a night and got back home at 3:30am. Such is the life of an aurora hunter :-)
BTW ... I wanted to comment on the no star trails. Use the "rule of 500", i.e. 500 divided by your FL will give you a pretty good guess as to what your max exposure length can be before you start seeing star trails. For a 14mm lens thats about 35 secs. |

I like the B&W rendition of the photo. It does a good job of expressing the atmosphere of the location. I like the alternating black and white areas of the wall; reminds me of the keys on a piano. The junk at the end of wall is making me ask myself what is this? Just some discarded junk, or the abode of some poor homeless chap. The roof at the end of the wall has lost all detail in the shadow. I'm not sure if I like this or not. On the one hand it causes my eye to concentrate on the junk, and on the other it is saying to me that I'd like the shadow opened up just a tad to show a bit of detail here. An interesting photo - thanks for sharing. |

Yup, bad toupee :-) A touch of burned out highlight in the neck, but not bad. I like how the focus is on the bird, the background is nicely blurred so that the bird stands out well from the background. Well done. |

Wow! This photo has high impact! The only criticism I can make is the silhouette on the wall on the right touches the edge of the photo. |
