Thanks, Stephan. As I mentioned in my response to Bob, my camera couldn't be any lower. I like the bench in the image. I suspect there are plenty of wooded areas in New England. You might be lucky and find a Mt. Cuba Center-like one. |

Thanks, Karen. I neither hate, nor like, the lightening of the image. Mt. Cuba Center is a place that strives to make this a place that's natural, from the dirt/grass paths to removing and destroying any vegetation that's not native to the area. |

Thanks, Gunter. You saw what I intended. The "small light strip" is a sun-lit area of the path (all paths in Mt. Cuba Center are natural). |

Thanks, Tim. That bench is a great place to sit and enjoy Mt. Cuba Center. I don't know about mono, I haven't tried a conversion at this point. |

Thanks, Bob. That's a bench. It would have been impossible to point the camera down and enhance the reflections - the camera was on the ground! I think the subject is enhanced as much as I want it be. I wanted to convey a sense of serenity. |

Beautiful image, Bob. Looks like the Blue Hour? I don't see anything I'd change about this image.
The downside of this image, to me, is what it represents. I spent some time at my sister's home in Charleston a couple of years ago and, all along the coastal areas I roamed looking for images, scenes like this greeted me. Speaking with some of the local folks, it's all about climate warming. The ocean is creeping inland and killing the trees. In the area of Edisto Beach, I was told the sea was more than 20 feet closer to homes than it was just a few years earlier. |

Welcome, Gunter. Your opening submission with the group is definitely eye-catching. I think Karen is right about the brightness, I feel like I'm looking at a flaming fireplace, particularly in the lower right corner. I like Karen's toning-down treatment. |

It's the EYE! Closely followed by the teeth! And, it ends with the missing bark dark spots on the tree. Nice shot!! |

I think my favorite parts of this image are the rectangular flowers. There is no way anyone who hasn't seen the original would know/guess that they were looking at a bicycle leaning against a flower-topped stone wall. The original is a terrific image also. |

First look gave me a feeling of seeing a Friday The 13th image. The distortion of the reflection is definitely eye-catching. Great color and love the bubbles. |

I went on a Google search and saw the building. Seems that the issue members have with the column could be eliminated with a little walking? I like the monochrome treatment. The sky adds to the gloomy feel of the place. |

Thanks, Arne. As I mentioned in my reply to Haru, I was really paying attention to the layered hills in the background and completely missed the disappearing separation. Something to work on! |

Thanks, Haru. I was pretty fixated on the layers of hills in background - something you alerted me to in an image a year, or so, ago. I didn't notice the separation between the dark greens at the castle and the lower surface disappearing. I will see if I can do something about that. |

I thought your title told us what you considered the subject to be - the foreground, with a nod to the temple as a locater. The only change I would suggest is lightening the walls a bit to show the texture. |

I agree with Arne's answers to your questions. I also agree with and applaud your challenging yourself. Arne's also correct that this is how we improve ourselves. |

Another in an on-going series of Turkish working class folks. I like that you've captured this man's concentration and his customer's patient waiting. I'd suggest removing the stick(?) protruding from the man's back. |

Haru is correct - this powerful image keeps drawing me back, particularly the area with the tracks. I like abstracts and guessed I was seeing a tree branch, or a leaf, perhaps a fruit or vegetable and, last, sand mounds with tracks. I think your tonal range is good. |

I like that the composition makes the three layers easy to see, along with the contrasting dark/light areas of each. Only suggestion I have is to lighten the dark areas on the table top and pole to separate them better from the water. |

I like the composition. I've had the same experience, with my Samsung S9, where the subject is sharp and virtually everything else in the image is blurred to some degree. I've attributed it to me. If I don't brace my arms against my body, my images tend to have some type of blurring. I was diagnosed about 15 year ago with a benign tremor in my right hand, so I'm pretty good a remembering to brace my right elbow against my side, or maybe my leg if I'm kneeling. I can shoot at 1/30 and get a sharp image with that technique. |

Victor, I've contacted the Webmaster to see if the non-transfer of your color profile is the result of something I'm doing. I'll let you know what he says. |

First thing that popped into my mind when I saw this image was, "How much longer?". They're definitely not enjoying the job. I'd also like to see what results from applying Victor's suggestions. |

I'll join the line of liking this interesting street shot. The couch is really out of place, not just on the street, but in time. Reminds of furniture I saw as a kid in the homes of people my grandparent's age (they were born 140 years ago). I also like Bev's adjustments. |

Interesting image that kind of draws me in after an initial wondering what I was seeing moment. I think the vignette is fine. I'd like to see all of her head and her feet in the sand. |

I think capturing the wall artist's depiction of people working on a pipeline was a good decision - simply because I would have done the same thing. As Ed mentioned, your exposure and focus are spot on. The changes that Victor added make the image much better, in my opinion. |

I see what your title implies and, if you were able to isolate that portion of the image, I think you'd have a good street image. However, there's so much competing with the women and the hat that it's very difficult to concentrate on them. |

Seems to me that this is a morphing into a topic that's somewhat outside the scope of our monthly commentary on the images presented. That leads me to suggest we take this discussion to our Bulletin Board, which you can find the link to at just about "dead center" at the top of the page. |

I completely agree about bees not being interested in attacking if you're not bothering them.
Your conversion of this image to mono and whatever adjustments you made to it make it look like a shot in some desolate part of the world made from the ISS. I don't know if that's good, or not? |

Fortunately, I don't have that problem. My son, however, always carries a bee sting kit with him. |

I think this is a terrific photograph - soft background, with pretty pastel coloring and nice shadows, that provides a nice pillow for the core of the flower that is sharp and has a kind of chartreuse center that really draws my eyes. My one nit is with that chartreuse center - it could use a touch of sharpening. |

Carol, you would be surprised at how close you can get to bees/wasps (hornets are different story). I have been REALLY close to wasps and, so long as you don't make a quick movements, they'll continue to feed while you continue to make images. Try it! |

As I mentioned in my comments about Stuart's image, I always look the image and then go to the "How I Did It". My guess on your image was that I was looking at some type of baked good - bread, a cookie - an insect's home never crossed my mind!
I think the colors - golden, brown, gray - are good, the image is sharp - I can see threads. I think it's a technically good, but uninteresting image. |

Regarding your comment "Looking for interesting subjects at this scale is quite a challenge I find.", I think it's related to magnification level you choose. I'd like to see your version of my image this month. I'm guessing it would be a portion of a single "bubble/grape" (I don't know the nomenclature, but I've contacted the Arboretum for info.
This image is pretty amazing. I had never seen this flower and now I know why - it only grows in the UK/Ireland. I always look the images before I read the "How I Did It" and rarely do I know what I'm seeing with your (and Tom's) images.
I guess what I'm seeing are the flower's anthers, stamen and filaments? The composition is very good - circle/curves/arcs really pull my attention into that area, the colors complement each other, it's very sharp in the core. I do agree with Carol that a solid contrasting background would be a nice improvement. Good work! |
