I'm not a purist. I've altered images. I just don't happen to believe in composites, in particular. I'd rather spend the time behind the lens trying to get it right, than in front of the computer trying to make it right. |

Bridges of this structure are popping up all over. I've seen one in FL and I think one somewhere in MD's Easter Shore. Like this image a lot. Nice composition, very sharp, good colors. |

Very good image. Like Karen's crop and Bob's removal of the large distracting white spot. |

Like the composition. Like Tam's treatment of the colors. Never been to Regensburg, but I think I've seen those spires in every other city in Germany that I have visited. |

I'll admit to being confused by some the reviews here. I have had a number of images critiqued for being cropped too much and not giving the subject room to get where it appears to be heading. That's what I see in these crops? I would crop some of the top and none of the right - "Rule" of thirds be damned. All that being said, I like this image and applaud Stephan for swimming with the sharks. |

There's absolutely nowhere on earth that can be thought of as a "good" place to get shingles. My case appeared during parent's weekend when our daughter was attending F&M. |

Like your composition. Not crazy about the "nothing" sky. Like Tam's B&W conversion. |

Another really beautiful soft image Denise. I like your adjustments shown in the reply to Carol. You're gonna love Longwood - make sure all your batteries are charged and you've got enough cards with you. Really looking forward to seeing some of what you get there displayed here. |

Coming in late, I agree with just about everything that's been said about your image of this beautiful Monarch. I'll offer you my solution to getting a sharp image of flitting butterflies - up the shutter speed. I've gotten into the habit of pushing the SS to 1/1000 (or higher if I'm trying to catch them in flight) and letting that control the aperture and ISO. I know lots of folks are skittish about high ISO, but if you're using a relatively new SLR high ISO is not what it used to be. Give it a shot and see what results you get - after all, if you don't like it, you just push the erase button. |

Red is always an eye-catcher and it certainly plays that role in this image. You did a nice job of capturing the center of the flower and the petals behind it. I tried to see what Bob's suggestion would look like by flipping my laptop upside-down and definitely did not like what I saw. I think the issue is your aperture. I think if you'd have been at f/13 or higher you'd have the foreground in focus. |

Being a "Bug Hunter" myself, I find this image really intriguing on a couple of levels. The first thing that surprises me is that you were able to isolate the head at f/11. I would expect to see more of the bug in focus at that aperture. The second thing is that it appears you were able to get really close. I find most insects are not very tolerant of a lens in their vicinity.
Well composed, interesting, sharp where it needs to be - nice shot! |

Have to tell you that I love nature. Also have to say that I do not love tree rodents. I like this image. Your focal point is really good, as it draws the viewer (me) to the squirrel's face and away from everything else about the animal and it's environment.
Also have to say something I think you already know - when it comes to Macro, I'm a purist. I don't like PSA's new definition of "close up" as OK for Macro. Just my two cents! |

Thanks, Denise. My flash is a Nikon SB-700. I always have the plastic diffuser in place and I add another diffuser over the flash. I usually have the SB-700 set for 1/2 power but in the Conservatory at Longwood I typically adjust it to 1/4 power.
I'll be at Longwood tomorrow night for the fountains and fireworks show. Something to see if you're there when it scheduled. |

I like the variety of lines in this image, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved; the sharpness that results from your bracketing; and the image's contrast. Agree with Arne that you could have cropped a little out of the bottom. |

I like the pose of the animals - seems one is keeping you under surveillance while the other is pretending to ignore you. I agree with the comments regarding the background and like Pamela's suggestion for a vignette. Maybe it's my old eyes, but I don't see the noise and I think with today's SLRs that offer ISO in the 50K range noise is less apparent. |

I find this an interesting composition of an equally interesting building. I think your decision to convert this image to monochrome was a good one. I think the upper left corner would be better presented as a solid black, matching the rest of the background. |

I get that everyone thinks the image is too dark. Here's my thought about keeping it that way. This image was made in the late afternoon with the sun going down and the area on right where the icicles are forming blocked the sun from the path. I like that - that's why I kept it that way. As far as the right side of the image goes, I should have cropped that but I'm pretty sure my thinking at the time was along the lines of that was my original focal point I wanted to keep it. Bad choice. |

I like the concept, the colors and sharpness. Obviously, I don't know what's at your subject's back, but I think you've cropped just a little to tight.
I love that 27mm pancake lens. And I love that my Fuji X-T20 can run silent when it's on manual because I never ask. |

Well Bev, it looks like you've hit a few nerves, and I find that to be a good thing. Are photographs supposed to evoke emotion?
For everyone who's commented - positive or negative - I think if you spend a little time searching the sites of some of the best street photography in the world, you'll find a lot of images similar to Bev's.
For me, I've have made that image in a heartbeat. I like the composition and it's sharp. My only nit is that it's a bit too bright. |

Being a life-long Philadelphian, I can tell you that the fountain in Dilworth Plaza is really popular. We have a 113 heat index today and I guarantee you that the fountain is over-crowded, as are all the others in the city.
I don't have a problem with your composition and presenting the boys back as the focal point. My interpretation of the image is of a kid playing in water, regardless of orientation. I might have considered cropping a little from the top and, perhaps, converting to monochrome. |

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw this image as Gaudi's Catalan Modernism - probably because I was in Barcelona last year. I like the pebble-induced distortion. |

I have seen this done in Paris and Barcelona, as well as in Rome. I've never considered trying to capture an image through the bubble - though that may now happen on my trip to Italy this fall - thanks for the idea! I think you captured this well - good color and good focus on "Bubble Man". |
