Jim, I had the same problem with this image. I really wanted to bring out more of the stylus, but I'm not good enough at PP to pull that off. Here's the best I was able to do by using the Dodge tool. I couldn't get the blade lightened without giving it a halo effect. I attempted to first Dodge it and then Burn around it, but that was an unmitigated disaster. |

Thanks Judy. As I mentioned to Bob, it was the light on scene that pulled me into the tent. I don't like the exposure of the ID tag on the lower left in your adjustment. I'm wondering about those mice colors? ;-) |

Thanks Bob. It was definitely the lighting that attracted me to this scene. |

Thanks Stephen. I did a B&W conversion, thinking about submitting it to the Monochrome group of which I'm a member, but didn't like it as much as the color image. |

Love everything about this image - composition, color, sharpness w/ motion, emotion - everything! Takes me back a half-dozen years to shooting my grandson's baseball games and trying to capture the ball coming off the bat, which I never was able to do to my satisfaction. Great shot! |

I passed by Mount St. Mary's on the way home from Florida a couple of years ago - I should have stopped. I really like the results of your PP. As Stephan mentioned, I'm curious about the blue hue on the church - is that the true color or is it a reflection of the sky?
Never been tempted by IR and, considering the amount of PP you did, doubt I'll ever get near it. |

Very nice hand-held image. For me, just enough light on the dancers. I was bothered by the small dots of light until I read your comment about the rework. You should post the new version. |

I like this image. Definitely a good candidate for B&W conversion. Nice composition, with just enough background to keep it interesting. |

John, the total weight is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 lbs. - D500 is 1.9, SB700 is about 1 lb with 4 AA batteries, and the diffuser is negligible - probably an ounce or two. |

Just another really nice minimalist, kinda soft, kinda pastel image Denise. I found it impossible to isolate one of these on my recent walk around Longwood. |

I like everything about this image - your crop, the brilliant colors, the tack-sharpness (agree that the original is really sharp), the sky. |

For me, this is a shot that tweaks my curiosity. The pink is really eye-catching. The horizontal bracts and the flowers in the center are very sharp, while the vertical bracts are blurred and the entire background is bokehed. This seems strange to me with an aperture of f/32? What lens did you use and do you know what your focal length was? |

Welcome John. Terrific macro shot of this Hoverfly. Nice composition, tack-sharp, great color. Looking forward to seeing your posts in the coming months.
Flash - I gave up on the ring that I was using and bought a used Speedlight. I've used it with an L-bracket to hold it above and toward the front of my lens, but have pretty much abandoned that now. I'm using the Speedlight with a 6x9 Fotodiox diffuser that I stuffed with a couple of SealedAir packing bubbles to keep it taut. That has been working better than anything I've used before. |

Welcome John, and thanks, hope you'll like this group as much as I do. When it comes to photography, particularly images I submit to another PSA group, "normal" is not a adjective that's usually associated with those submissions. I'm a rule breaker. |

Thanks Carol. I had to Google "haloing" because I'd never heard/seen the term before. From the description and images I found, I don't think that's what's going on here. I've attached the pre-crop image which, I think, shows the white areas you're talking about. |

Thanks Denise. I was at Longwood a couple of days ago and the place was filled with Columbines of all sizes. Haven't had time to look at my shots but I'm hoping for a couple of keepers.
I think you'll really like Longwood. My favorite places there are the Water Lily Display (which is only open in the summer), the Student Exhibition Garden (also summer only) and the meadow (amazing amount of insects in the summer). I don't know how much you'll get to see, but I'm guessing you'll enjoy it. |

I chase and photograph a lot of insects. I have never thought about capturing them and bringing them into my kitchen - or any other part of my apartment.
I like that you got the focus on the eyes and other areas of the face, and that the image is sharp and has good color in those areas. For me, there's too much "stuff" and the rest of the spider is too blurred. I'd suggest a minimum aperture of f/8 and, really, I prefer a minimum of f/11 to get the entire insect sharp (sometimes I find f/16 is required).
Your lens choice is interesting! {:O |

Bill, those black dots ARE the spider's eyes. What you're looking at, lower on it's face, is it's mouth. |

I really liked the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone, particularly the terraces. This is a really stark scene and, I think, is perfect for a mono image. I think I might have cropped the bottom to kind of "root" the trees at the base of the image. |

Hmmmm, how many of us have experienced that look from our children? He's definitely not happy. I like the light the way it is - it fits with the boy's mood. |

Nicely cropped, really sharp image of this bird. I like the monochrome much better than the color original. The background's a bit distracting but Arne's suggestion might help. |

There's little doubt that B&W was the right choice. My suggestion would be to crop the top just above the tips of the fir trees. |

I think you've done well Arne. I don't have an understanding of the gradients function in PP, but I like your results. Wondering about Pamela's suggestion of removing the bit of light from the sky - thinking the total blackness would have the ability to confuse the viewer - am I looking up, or down? |

The girl's face is mesmerizing. I know from the comments that her mother is suffering, but, for me, this image is all about this girl. I want to know what's going on in her head as she stares into your lens. She doesn't appear to be physically suffering but who, other than her, really knows? Very good story-telling image. |

Except for the day it rained, I don't think there was ever enough open space on the Charles Bridge for composing a shot like this in the week I was in Prague.
You definitely captured the happy mood of the group of friends. I'm guessing they picked the pose and you picked the composition? Nice shot! |

For me, this is very reminiscent of the town of Alba, Italy. I was never lucky enough to have a couple of nuns walk into the perfect light/shadow blend. Very nice composition, good B&W conversion choice. Nothing not to like about this. Great shot Colin. |

Welcome to the group Jim.
This is pretty interesting, first, because it's not my experience that folks offer to pose for street images. I think your colors are good and so is the sharpness.
I, too, find the image on the dark side. I think the elimination of the crossbar would be better done by cropping it out and drawing the top of the image closer to your model. The other thing I find distracting is the shadow - hers? |
