Thanks for your kind comments, Mary Ann. This photo didn't do as well as I hoped in competition. I've noted that our judges don't score abstracts as high as other photo styles. |

You are correct that photos taken from above sometimes are a surprisingly good capture. In this case, we had frost on all the trees and bushes that provided an amazingly beautiful morning. When I saw the ice was in the streamed too, the best way to take the image was looking down at it. |

Joan, I like the majestic look of the bison that you captured. Your sharpening on the close bison worked well to give detail to his head. The slightly more blurred second bison along with the hazy background give a pleasing composition and sense of place. I agree with Michael that a sky replacement wasn't necessary. I think a bit of adjustment just on the sky would give the improvement you wanted while keeping the sky appropriate for the scene. |

Mary Ann, I find your photo uplifting because of the cheery colors of the sunflowers. I especially like the one sunflower that is facing forward when all the other flowers are sideways facing the sun. The cyan sky with wispy clouds is a pleasing color combination with the greens and yellows. It's impressive that you're continuing to experiment with photo stacking. I'd prefer that the partial sunflower on the lower left be eliminated with a slight crop. |

Kieu-Hanh, I like the interplay between the artist and her artwork. You've captured the vibrant colors of her work. However, my eye doesn't stop at just the artwork, since the piece is inverted. You've also captured the unique look of the artist with details such as the paint on her leg. The blurred background gives a sense of place while letting the focus stay on the artist. If I look for any improvement, it would be that the artist's profile could be a bit sharper. That's just a small detail though. I like your lively "street scene" capture! |

Michael, your version of the ice on rocks works too. I agree that the B&W allows the image to become more abstract. The reason I converted the photo to B&W is that monochrome was the monthly topic for our camera club competition. I find that with the right photo, B&W can make an image more dramatic. However, as you express, the original coloring of this photo is nice on its own too. |

Robert, I like the sharp and wide-eyed look of this young buck. For me, the treat is seeing his small antlers just forming. While I'm often distracted by blurring of foliage in the foreground, in this case, it adds to the charm of the unexpected nature of your wildlife spotting. While you don't list your camera settings, they work well to blur the background just enough to keep my eyes on the buck.
Hope the deer continue to find other vegetation to munch instead of your flowers! |

Michael, I enjoy the unique shape of the boats and their striking color. The clear reflections and hazy shoreline in the distance create a peaceful scene to my eyes. The detail of the birds on the edges of the boats is especially interesting. I notice the lettering on the sides of the boats. I assume you left the words there on purpose. By leaving the commercial information on the boats, for me it becomes a commentary on the universality of technology even in rural and distant areas of the world. Was this something you intended? |

Andres, what a fascinating image! To me, it looks like the light was hitting just the cone roof the foreground and the rest was in shadow. By cropping out the sky and lighting the one roof, you emphasized the golden light in front. With the black and white structure of the other roofs, the background becomes almost an abstract. It's an intriguing shot. |
