Kieu-Hanh, I can understand why you like the vitality of your original background with the bright blue. I'm sure the photo brings back memories of the excitement of the music. |

Kieu-Hanh, I appreciate your comments and further explanation. As I explained to Michael, I wanted to use my granddaughter as a way for the viewer to enter the scene. The lake is massive, and I hoped that my petite granddaughter would add scale to just how amazing and huge this temporary lake is. The spot where we took this photo was quiet, without other people. So I was also hoping to capture the stillness of the moment. I didn't think my granddaughter's face would add anything to the scene, but that just her presence would indicate the specialness of this place. |

Michael, thank you for your comments. I'm glad you agree with me about having my granddaughter face the lake. I wanted her to provide scale to the scene, yet have the focus be the wonder of the lake. The ripples in the water were caused by her walking into the water. She was taking steps forward when I shot the photo.
I like your version of the image with the gradient used to darken the lower part of the photo. I like the placement of Sophia in the scene and prefer not cropping off more of the bottom. |

Joan, thanks for your kind words and suggestions. I agree about the white dots being a distraction. I removed a number of them. They are bubbles in the water which caught the light. The water is super-salty, so the bubbles are more noticeable. |

Joan, your conversion to B&W works well for this photo of Mammoth Hot Springs. I like that the sharper focus on the mound on the top of the photo draws my eye and lets me see the texture of the deposits. I appreciate the span of white to black in your image. What a wonderful place to explore and photograph! |

Here's a sample with the background more blurred and less vibrant. Does it help keep the focus on the performer? |

Kieu-Hanh, what a fascinating portrait you shot of this unique performer! Her costume and exotic make-up allow me to imagine the rhythmical music that she would create. Your front on view with her wide stanch looks bold and fearless. In my opinion, the background gives a sense of space on a stage, without adding to the look of the performer. I'd prefer that the background be blurred a bit, the horizon line straightened, and perhaps a slight vignette be added. Her eyes might look better with the whites lightened. That would keep the attention on this creative musician. Terrific capture, Kieu-Hanh!

Here's a sample of adding more contrast. However this sample is probably overdone, especially of lightening the snow. |

Robert, what an exciting opportunity to photograph from the cockpit of a small plane! Your cropping of the farm works well for me to see the details of the farm buildings. Your conversation to B&W is great, since the plane windows tend to give a blueish cast to photos and the scene has little color with all the snow. Taking out the road as Kieu-Hanh suggested improves the image, because that foreground distraction is eliminated. You might consider darkening the silos, outlines of the buildings, and trees to provide even more contrast. Your photo provides memories of an exciting experience! |

Michael, I like how sharp the bee's body is, especially the pollen basket. Having the bee's wings blurred works well, since they give the impression of movement. I appreciate that the front flower is in sharp focus and like that they're an unusual type of blossom. I'd prefer that the yellow area to the rear of the bee be darkened so the bee stands out more. Excellent capture, Michael! |
