Kieu-Hanh, the abandoned cabin was indeed falling down. It's on a main road several miles outside Crested Butte, so other photographers surely have stopped to take a photo. It's on private property, so it's not left just for photographers. Cabins like this were built in the late 1800's when miners came to the area for gold, silver, and then coal. Crested Butte is a small town that has attracted more tourists because of the ski area. However, the town itself feels "authentic" with many buildings left un-renovated and rustic. |

Kieu-Hanh, that's fabulous that you found the name of this building. It's fascinating that it's a remaining building from a gold mine. |

Michael, I really like this second angle of the abandoned building. With all the overgrown scrubs and trees, it does look and feel more abandoned. |

Mary Ann, I love the colors of the trees in your photo. You've enhanced the oranges and reds to make them pop. The white fence and barns in the background communicate a rural setting that's vibrant yet peaceful. I agree with Michael that a bit more grass on the bottom balances out the "heavier" trees on top. Pretty fall scene! |

Michael, thank you for mentioning Sharon Tennenbaum and her photography. Her work gives me some ideas for architectural photography and the perspective challenges that buildings sometimes present. |

Kieu-Hanh, the clock tower is interesting to me and you've captured the clock and other structural details well. The buildings on either side provide a frame for the tower. However, the perspective does distort the lines of the tower walls and other buildings. Your straightening of the horizontal bridge helps. I appreciate your thought process in using the wide angle lens. |

Robert, I love Bryce Canyon and all the fascinating spires and colors of the canyon. I like how you've lightened and brightened the scene to bring out the beauty of the view. Like Michael, I wondered what you wanted to emphasize as your center of interest. I see the tree and rock in front as the focus of your image. If that's true, you can crop out some of the sky to keep the focus lower on the tree and rock. |

Michael, I find the abandoned house in your photo to be intriguing. All the vines crawling up the side give me the feeling that the house is becoming a part of the landscape. I think your choice of b&w works well with the "aged" look of the house. The composition of the rustic road leading to the house on one side works well. The like the two dark windows. I think you could build the contrast even more on the house to emphasize that texture of aging. I played with some additional dodging and burning in PhotoShop to give you an example. |

David, nice job of keeping the cyclist sharp as you panned. I think you've achieved an appropriate differentiation between the cyclist and background with the level of blurring on the background. Seeing the woman's shirt and knowing about that day's demonstration adds interest in the timeliness of your image. The placement of the woman more on the left side also works to give her more "space" to move ahead instead of being right in the center. The right side of the background is on the bright side in my opinion and could be darkened slightly to keep it from distracting from the cyclist. Nicely done work on panning. |

Michael, thank you for your comments. The lighting was great on the background aspen, really making the colors pop. However, the cabin was backlit. I had lighting cabin some, but I agree that it was still too dark. Here's a second version with the cabin lighter and a bit more golden lighting to coordinate with the aspen. What do you think? |
