Kieu-Hanh, this image has blurring on the background done in PhotoShop. Then I added a vignette in Lightroom. What do you think? The vignette can be more subtle if this is too much. |

LuAnn, that makes sense. Using the golden spiral puts the center of interest in a slightly different location than the rule of thirds. However, both work with your image. I appreciate your explanation. |

LuAnn, the haze on the water would probably be a factor for some judges in the nature category. However, I think the bigger issue would be with the blurry grass blades that Kieu-Hanh mentioned. I did enter the photo in our club's nature monthly competition. It scored decently, but didn't win a best of show recognition. |

LuAnn, I'm glad you asked about photos in the nature category telling some kind of story. That is a topic that has been discussed in our photo club. That a nature photo is not just judged on how technically strong the photo is, but that it should tell a story--have some kind of action. I did consider that when I selected this photo. The fact that the baby alligator was resting on a lily pad is part of the story. Baby alligators first are supported on their mother's back in the water. This baby is one of two older babies still with its mother. The younger babies were climbing over each other in the nest in the grass. This baby has graduated to time in the water independently, but benefits from support from the lily pad. |

Mary Ann, I'm impressed that your experimentation with PhotoShop gave your image such a different and interesting look. Your choice to use the oil painting effect is a good one in my opinion. I agree with LuAnn that you could use the painting effect stronger in certain areas such as the roses, but more subtly elsewhere. You demonstrate for me that practice can prompt improvement. Kudos! |

Kieu-Hanh, the back swan gourd presents a wonderful contrast to the cream colored pumpkins. It certainly has an interesting shape and colors. I agree with Michael that the background pumpkins could be blurred to keep the focus on the dark gourd. The way the black gourd is perched on top of the white pumpkins looks somewhat awkward to me. I wonder if nestling it down a bit among the other pumpkins would help the positioning so it doesn't look like it's "floating." |

Kieu-Hanh, thank you for your comments, especially your suggestion for further cropping. That one blurred grass blade certainly made me consider cropping it out. I opted to keep more of the environment and alligator tail. However, I will consider cropping it out for other versions. |

Michael, thank you for your comments. You are right about the wonder of such a cute little alligator growing into a menacing adult. We found out that mother alligators are quite good moms and stick around to care for their offspring. Unlike the mother crocodiles who just leave their eggs to hatch like turtles do. |

Michael, your penguin portrait is beautiful. I find the yellow of his neck and orange of the beak striking. I like how you've brought out the penguin's eye without overdoing it. You are correct that judges for the nature category don't want a photo to look overdone or "fakey." It can be a fine line line between natural looking and over enhanced. |

LuAnn, I like the look of the muted colors, especially the red of the garlic. The sharpness of the image, with the details of the garlic's interior, add to the pleasing look of the scene. Your composition is well done. The curves of the garlic tops and lines of the garlic cloves make the image interesting. One question--with your careful composition, why did you leave such a wide margin on the right black? |
