Since the image becomes an abstract with just the reflected boat, I prefer the off-center crop. It looks more unique that way to me. |

I like the brighter red. It adds that pop of color at the end of the diagonal line. |

The bud coming from above is because I shot the photo from above. I just thought the two blossoms were in such a unique configuration, seeming to reach towards each other. That's also why you don't see the stems. The stems are underneath the blossoms.
I thought the background was an artistic contrast to the columbines. However, I do understand that you thought the background was distracting. |

You are correct that columbines are Colorado's state flower. We have a lot of them in wilderness areas in the mountains. Columbines vary from purple to lavender to blue. There's also a red columbine that is smaller. Thanks for pointing out the empty space on the bottom right. I'll have to consider how to balance out that empty space. |

Lisa, thanks for your comments. I see where you mean with the bent tendril. It's too bad that it wasn't straight, but I suppose I could just remove it too. |

Thanks for your kind words. As a matter of fact, a member of my local club asked that I give her a digital copy of my image to enter in a PSA print competition. I'll see how it does. |

I have done some sports photography with panning, particularly at the Bolder Boulder where 50,000 runners and walkers participate in a 10K race. I choose the spot carefully to get a background with few distractions and in consistent shade. I use a tripod set to move smoothly from right to left. |

Mary Ann, thanks for your suggestion to provide more distinction between the columbine and background in the top central area. Instead of changing the color, I darkened the dark edges of the flower. That helped too. |

Lisa, your photo fits well with the recent 4th of July holiday. Congrats on receiving acceptances for your image. Your cropping successfully removed many side distractions of the original image. I agree with Mary Ann that brightness is a distraction on the children's legs and on the face of the middle child. |

Mary Ann, I like the golden light from the lighting fixture in your photo. The line of the stairs railing nicely leads my eye up to that golden light. The perspective of the scene is definitely a challenge. I do like the architectural features of the house though. |

Kieu-Hanh, I really like the use of panning for your action shot. The placement of the bike on the right side works well too. I do like Michael's version with bringing down the highlights. Another option is to make your photo a high key image by lightening the background, particularly on the left side and right side corners. |

Michael, I like your choice of cropping. The small amount of waviness in the water makes the image more interesting. You've got a great leading line with the angled golden side of the boat reflection. Perhaps you could saturate the right red buoy, so the line would lead to something interesting. |

LuAnn, you've captured the butterfly's beautiful wing well. I think that your simplification of the background does help my eyes focus on the butterfly. I agree with Michael about the leaf on the far left being distracting. Also, I'd prefer a better view of the butterfly's head (if he would only hold still a bit longer). |

Who says flamingoes don't have fun? So did you take a closer photo through the bars of the gate or edit out the bars on your original? If you edited out the bars, I'm quite impressed. I'd love to hear more about your editing process too. I agree with Michael that you have some distractions in the background that could be removed or lessened. |
