Thanks for the link about the Reed Islands, Randolph. We had considered doing an overnight stay on one of the reed islands. I'm sure it would be fascinating. |

I like your cropped version, Lisa. The curving line of the water works well to bring your eye to the buildings. |

Lisa, I love how the long exposure has given your image the dreamy look of a paradise beach. The blurred people in the foreground add to the dreamy look. Your second attempt has made the colors look more natural. |

I understand what you mean about the changing weather and light conditions in Seattle. Our daughter did graduate work (UW) in Seattle, so we visited a number of times. Colorado has quickly changing light too. It encourages me to get out my camera quickly if the light is amazing at a particular moment.

Mary Ann, I love the calla lilies in your photo. I agree that the lighting enhances the flowers. LuAnn's editing eliminates some of the distractions of the background for me. Using dodging and burning selectively helps you draw the viewer's eye in to focal points. |

Kieu-Hanh, I like the vivid red and white of the rose against the greens of the background. Nice complementary colors. I agree with LuAnn and Michael that the center is a bit soft. I have found the same difficulty when taking photos of flowers. Michael has a good suggestion to change to f/11 or f/16 to capture the whole rose in focus. I like the thin red border, just enough to pop it. |

Randolph, you've captured an interesting journalistic photo. I agree that it's unusual for a palm frond to slid down the trunk of a tree. Your image is quite straight forward and shows the details of the frond's position. I do like the top of the tree shown in the original too, since it shows the original position of the leaves and how far it slid. |

Michael, I enjoy how the cardinal appears to lean forward with a clearly sharpened face. The bird's eye is especially sharp with a pleasing white glint. I like the softly blurred background with the agave. Depending on the dimensions you want, you could consider cropping the left side slightly. I also like LuAnn's suggestion to flip the bird so that it looks in the opposite direction. Beautiful image, Michael. |

LuAnn, thanks for your comment about the blue water. As you can see in the original, the water was indeed a vivid blue. Maybe it was the depth or the clarity of the water. But no, I didn't saturate the photo very much. As you can see in the original, the reeds were also very yellow. These people cut reeds regularly to continually lay down new layers of reeds for their islands. It's amazing that the islands are man-made in this process. They have lots of solar panels, because they don't have access to electricity from town. |

Mary Ann, I'm glad you noticed the sky. Those huge clouds building on the horizon bought a downpour of rain that evening in Puma. People in town held a parade with plastic covered floats of saints in the pouring rain. |

Michael, we were on a small tour boat with maybe 10 passengers (a tour is the only way that you can visit the reed islands to go on shore). You're right that with a moving boat, getting a well composed image of the people was difficult. The wind was also a factor. I wanted to honor that most of the people really didn't want their photo taken. Our visit was mainly for the experience, not for fabulous photos. |

Composition was difficult, since we were traveling by boat. The local people didn't always like to have their photo taken, so I tried to take images quickly and then put my camera down. |
