3 Nov 20 Reply Hi LuAnn. Thanks for your version with a more dramatic look. It makes the front building stand out. I worked to make the alcove ruins visible, but I appreciate when the emphasis is on the lighter building too. Nov 20th
3 Nov 20 Reply Lance, thank you so much for your comments. I appreciate your comment about feeling like you're going to drop off the edge. It felt a bit that way as I took the image. Nov 20th
3 Nov 20 Reply In Mesa Verde in southern Colorado, you can visit ruins such as Balcony House by long ladders. It's very exciting! Canyon de Chelly is different, since it's on Navajo land. We did hire a Navajo guide to visit the floor of the canyon. It's the only way to see some of the petroglyphs and views ruins along the River. Nov 12th
3 Nov 20 Reply Kieu-Hahn, thanks for your comment. I hadn't considered doing much adjustment to the ruins on the right. I did darken the shadows a bit. I mainly was concerned with the ruins on the left in the alcove. Nov 12th
3 Nov 20 Reply Lisa, visitors are only allowed to approach one ruins without a Navajo guide in Canyon de Chelly (White House Ruins, a 3 mile hike round trip from the canyon rim). This ruins area is not approachable at all, since it's part way up the canyon wall. The first building in the image appears to be in danger of breaking away and tumbling to the bottom of the canyon. A larger view of the canyon wall would make the ruins look tiny. That's why I focused in on the ruins. Nov 12th
3 Nov 20 Comment Lisa, the violets and reds of the bridge lighting and reflections are beautiful. I especially like the streaks of red that I assume are tail lights captured in the long exposure. Without reflections on the right side, the photo seems overbalanced to the left side to me. Lisa, I'm not sure what the best solution is for that, however a different crop might bring more balance to your striking nighttime image. I'm glad you stopped to take the photo. Nov 12th
3 Nov 20 Comment Mary Ann, I too like the diagonal line of the bridge that leads my eyes to the city. The buildings on the right side balance out the towers of the bridge nicely. I agree with Michael that more details of the bridge would add interest for me. Nov 8th
3 Nov 20 Comment I enjoy the beautiful fall colors in your image. The stairway provides nice leading lines to move my eyes upwards to the brightest leaves. I'd prefer that the sky not be so washed out and light. Perhaps a graduated filter could be used to darken the sky a bit. Nov 8th
3 Nov 20 Reply Thank you, Michael, for your comments. I too found the dark streaks in the rock to to create interesting leading lines. Canyon de Chelly is a fascinating place where one can "discover" numerous ruins hiding in the rocks of opposite canyon walls when you're up on the rim. Nov 8th
3 Nov 20 Comment This unusual flower is quite striking. In my opinion, making the background black creates a more dramatic setting for the subtle pinks and darker "points" of the blossom. I think the top view of the flower works well, since it draws attention to the rose colored "points" at the end of the petals. I agree with Michael that the slight diagonal on the left side of the image is distracting. Nov 8th
3 Nov 20 Comment Michael, welcome to Group 3! How fortunate you are to travel to places like Egypt! The character of this man's face with its wrinkles and scraggly beard is distinct and memorable. I agree with your decision to leave his clothing their original colors, since the clothing gives insight into his character. I'm not sure that the light blurred edge around the man's keffiyeh and bottom of the image works for me. The light color and blurring draws my eye there first instead of to the man's face. I'd also prefer the man's eyes not be so shadowed, since he has such a riveting stare. Congratulations on capturing a face with so much personality in a quick shot! Nov 8th
3 Nov 20 Comment I like the vivid fall colors in your image, especially with the orangish yellow of the central leaf. The curving stem and diagonal vein of the center leaf allow my eye to move and explore the other leaves. The presets you used in Topaz 2 add pleasing texture. I find that the large maple leaf in the upper right is on the light side for me and draws my attention off the page to the right side. I'd prefer that the right side of that leaf be darker. Nov 8th
