Mary Ann, welcome to Group 3! I agree that taking a photo of hummingbirds is a challenging. I appreciate the lovely color of the blossoms and greenery in your photo. Setting a high shutter speed enabled you to freeze the movement of the wings and capture detail in the feathers. To me, the blurry foliage is distracting and graininess is noticeable. Perhaps you'll get another opportunity for hummingbird images or at least enjoy the joyful flitting of these tiny birds. |

I find your retelling about the judge's comments interesting. Yes, it might be difficult to make a beam of light look realistic.
I agree that the shore of Lake Michigan is quite scenic. We traveled to Duluth and along the lake coast to Bayfield, Wisconsin a year ago. The rugged cliffs along the lake, especially the sea caves, are so scenic. Enjoy your one-on-one with the landscape photographer! Please do share what you learn from the experience! |

Kieu-Hanh, I'm glad you like the idea of leaving the log in place. Like you, it reminds me of logs that are often used for crossing streams on hiking trails. This one may have been left from a flood that hit the canyon a couple years ago. Unfortunately, this part of the Poudre Canyon is presently closed to traffic because of the Cameron Peak Fire that is burning nearby. |

The colors in your image work well for my eyes. The dragonfly is in a great position, and your fast shutter speed compensated for the strong wind. I appreciate the extra sharpening that LuAnn suggests. I'd prefer a tighter crop on the bottom and right side to draw attention more to the dragonfly. |

I really like the delicate coloring on the lotus. I like your use of the painting effect to add to artistic look of the blossom. Nice soft background and subtle water droplets. I agree with LuAnn that adding more space above the lotus would make the image look more balanced. |

I was interested in your description of how the shadows of the two thieves are cast on the back wall behind the crucifix. It is very unique. For your image, I'd prefer that you include the top of the arch, since it's part of the setting of the crucifix. Also, I'd rather you include the same amount of lighting fixture on the bottom left and right, so that it's balanced. |

To me, your image has captured some of the peacefulness present in church's side altar area. I agree that Beverly's adjustments add the richness of color in the scene and vibrancy of windows that make this old church a special, serene place. For me, the light in front of the windows and in the alcove in front of the altar could be enhanced more, maybe with contrast. |

Thanks for sharing the story of the lighthouse as well as information about the lighting celebration. I appreciate how your post processing has brought out the details of the lighthouse, cliff, and water. In my opinion, the lighthouse's position at the top of the rugged cliff adds to the dramatic view. Since you've lit the windows and brightened the lamp of the lighthouse, you could consider lightening the path that the "beam" of that lamp would cast out towards the water. Bravo for braving the cold for your shot! |

Thanks for your comments, LuAnn. I used a polarizing filter on my lens when I took the photo. I left the log, since I'm considering entering the photo as a nature or travel photo in competition. For those divisions, photographers are not allowed to remove or clone out items from a photo. I cropped on the left side, because I thought there was too much foreground on that side. I wanted the focus to be on the water.
I adjusted the colors by using the "cloudy" setting (it was indeed cloudy) and darkened the streaks on the water. I also darkened the bottom left foreground to keep attention more on the water. These changes I made in PhotoShop. I tried to keep the photo looking natural. From your further adjustments, it seems like I could consider more ending. |
