Well Catherine, I like both your black and white and your colored images equally! And either way I think it is a stunning image.
Some viewers might like cropping in tighter - I don't - I like what you have done.
The above comments should help you as you do more bird and tele pictures. Have fun experimenting! |

Lin, the ultra wide lens was the perfect answer to show the immensity of the lake.
If you were to take this picture again, you could try moving more to the left so that the dock is less centered and the right side is cropped more.
In my limited use of extreme wide angle lenses, I find one is advised to get really close to a foreground object.
Andrew and Don have some interesting suggestions. |

Jamie, I like this because of the repition of the decks and chair positioning. I like the almost monochrome coloring.
As to the mountains in the background, they provide context for the image and so I think should be included even a little more if possible. If you were to crop them out entirely, it would remove an accent that I think is needed.
By the way, having been in Death Valley, I can sense the searing daytime heat just looking at your image.
Lin did a nice job playing with the color.

Putah Creek, what an interesting capture. The foreground bushes and shoreline lead one's eye into the water and then on to the background where the water disappears into the distance.
Black and white works for this image. Nice job.
I agree with the above that your second effort is an improvement over the first. |

Thanks Jamie. These were young skaters learning how to do their art and compete. The tension was palpable. |

Lin you are correct to suggest a higher ISO and shutter speed which would make the image sharper. As I recall, I was experimenting with camera settings. A faster shutter speed would have made the image sharper, a slower shutter speed would have blurred the image, implying motion. |

Catherine, now that you draw my attention to it, I agree that the brightness of the yellow line is distracting. I will try dulling it down a little. |

Andrew, I played around with how light this image should be. I finally decided on this lightness so that there was a little tonality in the ice. But could be lightened slightly. |

Nice capture Julie. I think your sepia toning is right on to give this an ancient image feeling. And the sepia application brought out a little bit of cloud cover in the sky.
My personal suggestion:I would crop out the window on the right side but this is nitpicking. |

This is a fun image Andrew with lots of human interest. I particularly like the man in the foreground with the smile on his face.
As to cropping, I personally would not crop any tighter because the people in the background help to set the scene that this is a competition. In fact, if you have more of the background, I would include the people for their human interest. |

Lisa, as always you have created a technically superb image. Upon first viewing it, I thought of a ribcage drawing in a medical textbook. |

Nadia, I really like this hazy composite of the old man, the two doors and the moon with birds flying by. The hazy atmosphere, the translucent lighting, and the indistinct surroundings all work together. Now, for my taste I would rather have the walls and two doors attached to a home or building rather than standing alone in space. But as all tastes are subjective, please disregard my comment.
Thanks for creating this beautifully crafted image for us viewers.
The comments of all above have deeply delved into your philosophical creation.. |

Hmm Tom, I would critique this on two levels. You have done an admirable job of composting, making the mirror building sides to the staircase, then adding yourself gazing into the heavens.
But on an emotional level, you have insignificant man gazing into the heavens contemplating the immensity and mystery of life in space. This is not just a man thinking about what he is going to do this evening but a man pondering the unknowable.
Hazel and Brad have interesting comments.

Your response to Hazel helps explain what you were doing. Keep playing in Photoshop!

Thanks Brad. And yes, we each have our own preferences which is the wonderful part of this PSA digital dialogue.
As to the stories in images which you do, I so appreciate your creations and which I find so difficult to do myself. But as I watch what you do, I become challenged to step outside of my comfort zone and try it on occasion. |

Hazel, the wonderful variation in shapes, lines, and colors really appeal to me. The blending that you did of the various layers nicely enhances the effect as does the waves to the rectangles themselves. Were it me doing this, I would lighten it slightly but this may be that I should brighten my monitor slightly. Great image.
Actually I also like equally images 1 and 2. Brian has an interesting in depth analysis. |

Brad, I like the softness and bright colors of this image to indicate spring is upon us. The blurring is well done. Perhaps a little more room on the right for your daughter to jump into would be helpful but this is nitpicking. |
