Hi Andrew, I went back to check the bokeh on this image. I don't think I did anything special. Tripod, 35mm zoom lens, f4 @ 1/60 of a second. It was early in the day with probably a little mist, maybe a breeze to sway the background leaves. Probably being close to the statue at f4 through the background out of focus. |

Great Catherine! I am entranced by two beautiful women in formal white dresses walking hand in hand backlit across a meadow. Now here's the thing - I'm a guy and I would like to see a little more of these women, a little more sharpness to show their beauty. So in taking the picture, probably zoomed to telephoto, use a wide open aperture and focus on the women. They will be sharp, the rest blurred and dreamy. Well, it is an idea but it might not convey what you thought as you took the picture.
Now having read the above comments I think you have a wonderful capture of the moment. Some judicious cropping might make a slight improvement but basically you captured it. |

Alison, I like your cropping and bringing the color up a little. The result is a great silhouette which exudes a pleasant fall walk through falling leaves. I like the detail of the fallen branch in the lower left. The sun highlight might be darkened a little but on the other hand, that is what one sees walking a forest trail.
Great work.
Andrew has some good suggestions but I still like your version best. |

Jamie, you captured a long exposure perfectly in my opinion with some hint of detail in the water falling over the rocks and in the foam. Actually the foam and the detail of the rock bedding on the left side are a wonderful accent to the falls.
Leaves - you could use the blur tool in PS to deemphasize them a little.
I do not often work in black and white so my comments on B&W aren't too valid but I would play with the contrast and brightness sliders as below. Hmm. My playing with the sliders didn't really result in any changes. Alison and Andrew have better ideas.

Don, nice work with a subject that can provide endless abstract crops! And your crop is good. Since you challenged your viewers to do their own crops, I hereby submit a smaller crop which I did and then applied a polar coordinate filter in PS to get an abstraction. What fun to experiment!

Julie, this works for me. I think it is a really creative still life! The lighting is good but next time you might try placing the light slightly lower. The combination of using food and children's dinosaur toys works. The muted, out of focus background works. I think your venture into still life really worked. Now I'm waiting to see what other still lifes you create.
It is interesting to see how your still life has interested others above!
Great job! |

Andrew, great capture of the plane coming in! Your addition of a background cloud works perfectly.
I have nothing to add. |

Alison, how exciting that you looked at the statue and discerned three figures. Quite honestly I have looked at the statue over the years and never taken the effort to sort out the figures. Now, the next time we are in Minneapolis to visit our son and his family, I will go to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and really study the sculpture and the interplay of the figures. I will send you some more images taken from different angles so we can understand what the artist was doing.
I find this fun. As I was taking the picture I was concerned with the flat lighting, white background sky, whimsey of someone's pumpkin placement, and bokeh of the image. You with your artist's eye, were evaluating the sculpture and how it should be portrayed. You have challenged me to be more aware of all the elements as I take pictures in the future. Thanks!

Andrew, your crop is good.
As to the background bokeh, it will vary image to image depending on what I do. On this I was focused on the close foreground statue at f4 aperture so the background went soft. |

Steampunk character - hmm, I had to do a google search to learn about steampunker characters. VirusBuster. Perfect image to use for a virusbuster! I love the green face which fits into the whimsey of the image! Your concept is beautifully carried out.
Great creation!

Jan, such a simple image using egrets in a territorial dispute along with a texture to create a dramatic picture!
I don't have any suggestions to improve this. |

Tom, you have done an artistic creation with your compost! The sunflowers, the birds, the orthodox church, and sunrise all work well into an integrated Halloween whole.
How about making your granddaughter a little more prominent? I almost missed her when I first looked at this.
The others above have good suggestions. |

Kathy, this is a great adaptation of Chihully's glass sculpture which is so creative to begin with. But your rendition of it into a figure takes it to another level.
I love the green hair adornments. How about making the eyes a little more prominent? The suggestions above have some merit.
