Blue abstraction or reflection is the key here. Catherine, you caught the reflection of the boat and the post. Nice work.
Another way you could look at this is to crop in for more of an abstraction and let the dark blue lines be a center of interest. Here is an example but certainly no better than your cropping.

Jamie you could play with contrast adjustments but another solution would be to do a close crop getting rid of the right upper left corner such as my example here. You lose much of the waterfall but get rid of the white empty space.
Nice image!

This is contrasty Anne but that's the way the West is, harsh sun, clouds, and weathered wood. I think you captured it perfectly. You might have included the top of the wagon but that is knit picking. Wonderful! |

Julie, your slight cropping and muting the highlights and opening the shadows have produced a beautifully soft image. I enjoy the woman and then letting my eyes roam through the various portions of the image. I can't think of any changes to suggest.
Nice work! |

This is a nice sharp image showing the hugeness of the engine and the intentness of the young engineer doing his work. The different spots of red provide some interesting contrasts to the predominantly dark tones.
As to cropping on the right hand side, I think the image is fine as it is. Black and white might become to dark.
Nice capture of the Dresden Steam Festival! |

Hi Maryellen,
My mother in the early 50's went to Guatemala to get weaving patterns that she could use on her hand loom. I went a few years ago to see the contrasts of the country. |

Brad, your point is well taken to think about the story the compost is telling. Each layer here is telling a different story from indigenous woman to motorcycle transportation to skyscrapers. I should have hunted for images that had a more common theme.
Composting really challenges one to think of elements that go into the image. |

There used to be cartoons, I think it was the Adams family, which this reminds me of. All the compositional elements are here: the lights and darks, the fence line leading into the center of interest, the yellow windows and the white lighthouse lights just build a powerful image. There is nothing I can recommend for improvement. |

And once again Jan you have had a creative concept and carried it out superbly. You turned the birds to look toward each other and then did some painterly work imparting a ancient work of art feel. Top notch job which I cannot find any way to improve. |

Maryellen, one can always make an adorable picture of one's pets but this creative, artistic image really catches viewers' eyes. I like the sharpness of the blue eyes and the swirly lines of the hair from the center of the cat's face.
How did you achieve this swirly effect?
Congratulations!

Kathy, great concept and great composting! Wonderful night sky with the Comet Neowise reflected in the still pond water. You had to do some careful timing to get all that to work. Dave playing is the icing on the cake!
When I first looked at this I thought it should be brightened up but no, that would lose the feeling of deep night. |

Brad, I'm not so sure that after a day of backpacking I would be up at 2 am for a series of star trail images.
I think this is great and have no suggestions!I like the butterfly facing into the center of the image and that the mountains are illuminated. Great!
In regard to Larry's comment above, I just took this to be whimsical and wasn't concerned about relative sizes.
