I appreciate that, "gold" is fine.
Have you tried monochrome or a negative monochrome? |

It's a super effect although I struggle with "avian", presumably you are thinking of feathers?
Have you thought of a different colouration (like blue), as you know I am not fond of brown. |

comparing the two versions I much prefer Tom's - not quite sure why. |

Is it sharp enough? I feel would be better with the top and bottom parts taken off. |

My eye is drawn to the boat + mast on the horizon which is the only sharp bit, so I would be tempted to clone that out and perhaps straighten the horizon at the same time. Otherwise a neat trick. |

There is an awful lot going on here, my eye tends to wander around too much and it lacks a single point of interest. I think I see a blue lion on one of the thirds' it might work better if the left hand 2/5th was chopped off to emphasise it. Alternatively, the image looks quite different if rotated 90 degrees - I see waves. |

Hi Darin, I think this is better (more natural, although nothing wrong with sometimes going over the top!). My only visit to the west coast (Big Sur) was a few years ago and although it was daylight there was something almost magnetic about the flashing lighthouse near there (which I miserably failed to capture), so well done.
My only suggestion would be to adjust the tilted horizon which are easily corrected in e.g. Lightroom. |

Hello Eric, I keep on coming back to this image. I think the steel blue with the occasional bits of green very attractive and well done. My only criticism is that it looks a bit soft in the bottom left hand corner. Good shot! |

It's really great to capture these locomotives when they are out and about. They move surprisingly fast too! This is very much a head-on shot and I think it would have been better taken a few seconds later when more of the side of the engine was in view. That would also mean the headlight wasn't pointing straight at the camera. It would be nice to see that version if you have it.
Cropping is very personal but I would be tempted to ablate the figure on the left hand side and maybe the aerial wires too. What do you think? Andrew (Group 40). |

Thanks Nature+ Group 52! I don't think I will be entering this in a ND salon so a bit of tweaking is going to be OK. I obviously took lots of shots of this pair. This image does have natural catch-lights albeit small; I suppose I could enhance these. It is amazing how in many of the images the eyes are inaccessible, being naturally hooded. I think you are right about the background and I will work on that as well as the grass, although it seemed natural at the time, being in May (we've had lots of rain). I might have some room on the left, need to check the original. Thanks again. |

Looking at the picture a second time, it strikes me that there isn't really an upright vertical or un-tilted horizontal line. The bridge roadway and the roof board line at the entrance slope in different directions. The right hand upright is about OK but the left hand side is definitely wonky. This may reflect the fact its a man-made structure although it's only 1990. You have also cropped the apex off the roof. I am not sure you can do very much about this in post but it somewhat detracts as an architectural record shot. Do you have any other shots taken at a wider angle? |

A nice view, very dramatic processing and it should do well in salons.
This is question of taste but it might be worth looking at lightening the shadow and darkening the highlight areas - it might be less dramatic but might do better for photo-travel. Just a thought. |

Both are nice shots, perhaps the shadow areas on the faces in the original need lightening a touch. The clouds are fine but obviously could be easily changed. My only suggestion would be to crop a little off the left hand side trees. |

These are (nearly) always interesting subjects. The "original" appears to have more detail than the "final" version but to my eye shows an unnatural lack of shadow. The "final" is still too dark under the roof IMHO. I have tweaked the "final" in LR increasing shadow detail by +50 which to me looks better.
To be honest I tend to use the Photomerge HDR facility in LR and it works reasonably painlessly. |

Jennifer Empsey has a very nice abstract in Group 18 this month. I must say I don't much like the colours or the textile effect here - it needs a bit more focus and overall it isn't really gripping me. The original might well be better with a bit more contrast.
But certainly worth while looking at doing more abstracts. |

I think the treatment here makes for striking image which works well. I agree with Kathy about the background rider who has almost disappeared - it would be nice to be able to see more of him. Andrew (Group 40) |
