15 Mar 21 Comment Hi, Kristi,
This reminds me of the movie for streaming called "My Octopus Teacher" You all would want to see this. It's either on Prime Video or Netflix. A free dover discovers a small octopus, a female, and they become friends. The octopus reaches out to his hand a one point when she really feels comfortable with him. It's a lovely story/documentary that he photographs.
As for your image, I find it very provocative. Octupousses / octopi are famously very intelligent ranging up there with dogs and cats. This photo kind of shows it as he reaches toward the rock. Very good use of the liquify filter.
Nice job.

15 Mar 21 Comment The composites work so well together. This is an outstanding collection with each element prefect for what you were trying to do. Your creativity continuers to inspire all of us. Where did you get that moon, did you say?
Lovely.

15 Mar 21 Comment Billy, Welcome to the group!
I think your ice storm gave you a great opportunity to get wonderful ice on the branches of the trees and other objects in your yard. The curve you have chosen fills the frame beautifully, and the lighting works very well for you. Thankfully you chose an aperture that gave sharpness only to the bough and totally made the background nicely blurry. I am surprised you needed to go to f11 to do that, but it seems to have worked well. Also I have to admit that I don 't see any color is this; it gives the impression of a sepia image, which is fine. Nice photography.

15 Mar 21 Comment Your peonies are really beautiful. Well photographed and nice and sharp. The background is a mixed blessing in my opinion. I really like the top part of it, but down below you have some lines that could be removed using Photoshop or Lightroom. The while line that is vertical and a thinner white line that is horizontal. I don't know if you have the ability to go into the more complex programs such as Photoshop and Lightroom, and I suspect that the iPhone doesn't have that capability. However, I could be wrong about that. Otherwise a lovely shot.

15 Mar 21 Reply Bruce,
You might consider u sing a fairly high ISO to start. As for noise, it definitely depends on the camera's ability to handle high ISOs Or you can go the other way and use a low ISO with a longer exposure. The moon wouldn't move too much in say 30 seconds. Another thought

15 Mar 21 Comment Bruce,' Welcome to the group again.
Your moon placement is perfect. You were saying that you are having trouble with the dark and light areas in night photography. I understand that the moon might look blown out if the rest of the image was lightened. As a suggestion, you might consider exposing for the bridge and water, then take another photo in the exact same spot exposed for the moon and combine them in Photoshop or whatever program you are using. At the moment the photo is so dark that I can't enjoy the bridge or the water to their fullest extent. If you want a quick course in the use of layers please ask me. Otherwise, you could try darkening the moon with the various brushes, but that won't work as well. Another thought is to make an HDR of 3 or 5 images and combine them in the program you use. Some cameras can do this on request.

21 Mar 21 Comment Janice, Welcome again to our group. The colored circles around the sun bring this image into the creative category. I love your cranes in silhouette making their escape, while the bids in the background give the image more depth. The posterize filter is a simple one, but works well in this circumstance. Nicely done! Mar 25th
21 Mar 21 Comment Phill,
I think you made some interesting changes from the original, but truth be told, I prefer the original as it has more color than your final image. Maybe just changing the sky to blue or emphasizing the black and white image more would give it a little more impact. I also would point out that Creative requires a little more than just changing colors on the original to fit the division. PSA's definition of Altered reality certainly doesn't show up here. Our Concil changed the definition of Creative extensively, where we specified that a creative photo could look realistic as long as the concept was creative. Neither of these definitions applies to this image. But I am glad that you are thinking of ways to improve your pictures..

21 Mar 21 Comment Your original image is quite interesting in and of itself. The use of Gimp, to enhance the colors works very well. Interesting that both you and Brian are working with icicles as an important part of your image. The bigger blue area to the lower right is the only thing that I have my doubts about since every other color is much smaller and helps tell the "acid" story.
Looks like fun. I am not familiar with gimp, unfortunately.

21 Mar 21 Comment What you have done is very similar to the procedure used by Harold Davis in which he photographs a flower on a Lightbox at many different exposures, then uses Photoshop to work with the various layers in an artistic way to produce an end piece that has a translucent effect. You have created your own way of doing it and it is really quite creative. I wish you had shown us the original photo for comparison.
Also you might consider a different background than white. Just a thought.

21 Mar 21 Comment It reminds me somehow of the panes of a building at an angle. The icicles, because they are horizontal, not vertical, I find a bit difficult to assimilate. The whole is definitely an abstract which is interesting, but missing something. I wish I could express myself better on this. I do agree that the black area on the upper right could be cropped down. It draws the eye unnecessarily. Maybe filling the whole image with the icicles part would work better for me. Sorry, Brian, this one has me puzzled. Mar 25th
21 Mar 21 Comment Peter,
I almost feel sorry for the very naive judge. Funny story. Your concept is a good one but perhaps could have been more carefully crafted. I see quite a lot of black areas around the monkeys which could have been erased by blowing up the image so you can really see what you are doing. Also some of the petals of the water lily, maybe. The reddish color in the lower right might also have been stricken out or clones out or darkened as you have plenty of color in the image as it is. But, cheer up. Your concept is great. I did something like it many, many years ago which I titled "Tom Thumb." I will attach it for fun.
