Rick,
It's hard to believe that this is your first B & W photo. Incredible! What a difference it made in the lighting between the original color and the Topaz induced monochrome. The sky has become so much more dominant and the big shadow in the original is totally gone, opening up the photo so much more. The angle you used works well and the entire photo now has such a feeling of desolation and antiqueness to it. I like what you've done and have no suggestions for improvement. |

I love the use of the Flood filter; it always makes the image so much more creative and impressionistic. Your colors are wonderful here. The flower is really beautiful and I like where you cropped it relative to the water. The background is also so well fitted to the image. The colors are close to each other in the color wheel, but far enough apart to lend a lovely blend between the greens and the golds. Nice work!

Your use of a fairly slow f stop helped blur the Background, which is good. Your front rider looks sharp to me. If this is for journalism, you really can't do too much with the left side. I would like to see it cropped and the stuff there removed since the cropping would have to include some of that. You need space to move into, so I would probably crop some and remove the other stuff with the clone tool or Content Aware. It's a lot of fun to go to these motocross tracks and watch them. You might try f16 and set the speed to 1/15 second to see how that catches the motion of the rider. You can adjust the ISO to really low to help with that. |

I wonder what they were doing with the flag? What was their raison d'être? The photo is very well taken, great exposure, nice and sharp. I'm trying to guess if the one on the right is pregnant? Are they a gay couple? Friends? Family members? So many questions are raised here. The grey background of the Wall Street building works splendidly against the bright colors of the flag. You've definitely caught their attention. Did they tell you the story? |

I presented this in camera club recently and the judge thought it was way too soft, but loved the lighting I had achieved. |

Your starting point is a remarkable photo in and of itself. What an interesting plant it is. Your final creative product is quite appealing; I like the combination of the red section with the yellow section, then your use of polar coordinates to give the spray effect around the outside. I do agree with John about leaving a little more black around the entire flower. If it didn't come out like that, you can add black by extending the canvas size right and left and then filling in the space created with the exact same black color you are using. |

Your final product is very wistful. A lovely young woman alone on the beach followed only by a gull gives a strong feeling of mystery. She could almost have been posing for you. You chose the right Topaz filter; I particularly like the use of a white vignette around it. Walking out of the frame is fine with me as it gives a sense of completion to the story. This is not a highly creative effort, but the end result is very pleasing and certainly holds the viewer's attention. |

What would we do without Bodie? Such a wealth of photographic topics. I wonder if the old shack is still standing. Your posterization is barely recognizable on the main part of the image, except in the sky. The composition is good, but I would try for something a little more creative next time. The photo per se is quite evocative and tells the story of Bodie. |

Brian,
I really love what you've done to this cross. The angle is excellent and the rays of light shooting out from it really give it that extra interest that we are always seeking. The retaining of the color or recreating it on the cross is perfect. I do not see the oil painting effect in the grasses, but it's hardly necessary. The most important aspects of the this image is the strong attraction of the cross and the wonderful zoom effect you have created to really give it substance and a heavenly feeling. |
