19 Jun 17 Comment I really look forward to everyone's photos but I anticipate that Herb will have a unique view. What a striking composition. Great to use monochrome! The shapes inviet the eye in and then you spend a great deal of time sliding up and down the scene. I would give this shot really high marks. An excellent effort, Herb. Bravo! Jun 11th
19 Jun 17 Comment A very nice action picture! it tells a great story - I would not want to be the umpire who had to call that "safe or out" it looks too close to call.

I agree withStan's suggestion about the lighting. The dirt is the wrong color but you could darken it with NIK Viveza or similar effects. The right hand side and the bottom third of the picture are too bright.

19 Jun 17 Comment Hi Norm,
You had a couple of things working against you. The time of day being one of them. Noon lighting is probably the hardest thing to put up with. sometimes you can use a travel companion to stand in the light path and throw a shadow in the background or foreground. Your whites are a bit blocked up and loose detail in the really briht areas. Try setting your bracket exposure adjustment to -.3 or -.5 stops. And try shooting three burst series with -.3, -.5, -.75 or even 0, .5 and 1.0 underexposure for this time of day.

Work the scene by crouching down, standing to left and right, shoot vertical and horizontal, try Aperture priority to blur the background. Shoot later or earlier in the day.

If you choose to use a vignette, it should be VERY subtle. Adjust the opacity downward until the vignette seems to disappear and then back of a very tiny bit - it should be almost subliminal.

consider blurring the foreground and/or the background or use a blur vignette to focus all the attention on your choice flower.

19 Jun 17 Comment I really like B&W. This is a striking picture with great emphasis on the statue and a terrific background treatment iwth it's leading lines and textures. I concur with the comments about NIK and Silver Effects Pro. The program is now officially terminal and I will miss it a great deal when it fades away. I thought at first that this might have been a Photoshop creation. It's really a great monochrome with excellent tonal values. Jun 11th
19 Jun 17 Comment What a nice sharp shot! But, John, I don't think that's what they mean when they say, "light painting." (just kidding)

Nice rule of thirds cropping, nice leading lines from the right lower corner, great exposure to give some detail in the white areas.

19 Jun 17 Comment Thanks for the comments guys. I can remove the shoes from the guy who is belaying from above - he has an important job but doesn't need to be in the picture. The rock color is very close to the original. It was a cold, overcast rainy/showery day so I had the WB set to cloudy. I probably should not have had the camera also set to record bright saturated colors. I was standing on a narrow trail that went up the side of theclimbing site - trying not to look down and watching my feet as much as the subject. Not the sport for me in my old age... Jun 11th
