19 Aug 17 Reply Actually, I think I like it better with the sky in. My crop makes the rock color kind of all -encompassing. Aug 26th
19 Aug 17 Comment What an interesting angle on this action Carroll! At first glance, I thought you had created this image from separate elements - then I realized it was an actual photo. You clearly anticipated this composition with a super outcome. Using the pieces of paper as a foreground is delightfully unexpected. Placing the monk just aside the vortex of the 2 triangles is perfect placement. The color of the triangles adds great spark to the dull sky. The pieces of paper in the sky echo the large ones on the ground. I'm wondering if the 'usual Chinese sky' means there is a lot of pollution, because the image itself - the monk - seem to be a bit hazy. I attempted to de-haze a bit by increasing contrast...see VF. I think all it really does is darken the monks robe and makes him stand out a tiny bit more. Aug 21st
19 Aug 17 Comment I like your treatment of this composition a lot. it suggests impressionism. The colors in this image are really wonderful - all the muted colors of the wood and wall paint - suddenly sparked by the brilliant orange and green of the fruit. Very symbolic - the light of life (candle) is snuffed out. The fruits of labor (maybe?) have not saved these 3 folks from the inevitable end. The splotches of black suggest to me that life degrades even as we live it. Such a story in this composition. So everything in your choices works well here! One wonders if Cezanne planned this composition with those kinds of things in mind. Aug 21st
19 Aug 17 Comment Great catch - I see it is a crop, so you identified a 'picture within a picture' - which I love to do. This image is all about that amazing light glow - and the shapes. The dome and the arches juxtapose with all the other linear lines which makes for a very interesting image. The glow suggest to me the vibrancy of religious fervor? One can layer an interpretation on the light alone. I wanted to see what this would look like if the blue hill in the background was more saturated - to balance the warm glow. See what you think in the VF. Aug 21st
19 Aug 17 Comment Three great things jump out at me from this image: the colors of rust and green; the swirled edges of the cliff imparting a real dynamism to the image; and the S curve of the river drawing the eye through the image to the horizon. Great job! Nice touch of the little green shrub - alleviates all the rusty red of the rock. Since the sky is not that interesting, wondered what it would look like without it? - see VF. Aug 21st
19 Aug 17 Comment I'm going to PSA Pittsburgh - see any of you there?
Was the mouse addition yours? Humorous image! All the compositional elements are well placed - the way they are angled to the right gives a sense of imminent movement to the image. The arching of the hub is a nice juxtaposition to the angled arms. Great peeling paint and rust, nicely included latch. The mouse is in the prefect spot and his silver adds a spot of brightness. Nice shot! Id just get rid of the bit of mouse doo (??) on the one vane....

60 Aug 17 Reply Bill-
I was just critiquing your great bee image from a composition point of view. I didn't know you were presenting it as an 'official' nature photo. Yes, they have strict rules and you are probably right that you cannot make changes like I suggested if you are going to entire it in a Nature competition. However, you can enter it in an Open category and do whatever you want to it...

60 Aug 17 Comment Never seen such a brilliant green in a critter before! The colors are riveting. Very, very sharp eye, beak and head feathers. Great catchlight in the eye as well. Background is bright, but he is SO bright it works behind him - those swatches of yellow and lavender. Not sure where the edges of this image are? I get a sense of looking through a keyhole at him; an unusual and interesting approach. There is a slight yellow line at the right margin - is that the edge of the photo? Aug 21st
60 Aug 17 Comment My first reaction was - oooo! Very interesting, very unusual! Clearly a successful outcome of all the time you put into it. It literally shimmers with heat due to the vibrant red and other glittery specks throughout. I like the brighter light on top and bottom of the cap with the darker area in between - it really gives the object dimension. I'd suggest tilting the object a bit to give it more sense of momentum. Great image! Aug 21st
60 Aug 17 Comment Interesting that even at 1/1000 sec shutter, the wings are still not frozen - amazing how fast they must bee (pun)! But you caught the rest of his body very sharp pretty much from front to back - exquisite detail in all parts. The hairs and even the pollen grains are very distinct. Nice light highlighting its back. The colors you captured are wonderful - that burnt orange -gold body against the medium soft green is super. And the plant seeds are the perfect touch - green and white adding a nice brightness to the composition. Something that catches my eye is that the seeds are cut off at the upper margin. If this was a crop, perhaps you can correct that. My eye is also pulled to the convergence of the bees 'feet' with the seed head. I have cloned that out in the VF to clean it up visually. I also removed those 2 pink dangling seed hulls - they really draw the eye away from the bee. I removed a tiny speck of white from the upper right corner. One thing I learned in a photo workshop I took is to always watch for convergence of major compositional elements and try to avoid them if at all possible. And to always make sure the photo margins are clear of unnecessary bits of thing poking in or out of the image. See if you think its an improvement... Aug 21st
60 Aug 17 Comment Will I see any of you in Pittsburgh at PSA?
Nice catch - I feel like I can reach out and touch him. Some really nice elements here - you got the head area nice and sharp; so sharp I can see his iris and his pupil. Love the way the light is catching the hairs on his chest bib - great detail. Beautiful background bokeh- very soft; nice coloration. I agree with the guys about the fence though. See my VF for a suggestion how to handle this - I took the white down a bit so it doesn't overwhelm so much...
