The creativity of some of you is amazing, this is a prime example, to visualize this image and find the right opportunity to take it. I like that you planned it so the lines would be horizontal and vertical in the composition. The two people are one in about 1/3 from the top and the other in 1/3 from the right. I suspect it took some time to wait for what you wanted. Yes, that ball or whatever needs to go. An example of what some teachers talk about "border patrol" of our images. A step in the process being to look all around the edges of an image without getting distracted by the image itself, just looking at the border area. |

I feel the strong contrast works well with this image. It is a busy image which works well to hang, but probably not so well for judging. Judges trying to come up with a score in a few seconds are not going to be reliable with this. I personally like the image and have no suggestions.
The Tucson PSA Festival is in an excellent hotel where the PSA price is a good deal. It is not peak season or the price would not be available. There is a lot to see and photograph in the Tucson area which I think you will be learning about in the Journal. Shirley and I intend to go and we checked it out in January this year. Not only is there good photography in and around the city, but I would recommend renting a car and doing Arizona and perhaps some of Utah for a week or so. Great landscapes are available with multiple nationial parks and Monument Valley. |

Fog pictures seem to work best when we have something relatively close to the camera that is clear and if it is a mono or near monochrome, dark. This image meets this criteria very well, but I don't know that the branch is that good a dark subject for me. My favorite is boats, but there are a lot of things to try. The discussion about removing the color of the leaves is interesting. You might try a mono version, mask through to show the color on the leaves on the dark branch, but not on the more foggy branches farther back. That might put more interest in the primary dark branch. |

I once read that the only time you can get the canyon well lit on both sides is in June, then later I saw a picture of the falls with good light on both sides and read that it was taken in September, but it was taken by moonlight. Next time take it in June or if in September, go when the moon is full. You have captured it well for when you were there. You might want to try a slower shutter speed for a softer look to the falls, or try it with a cellphone that can create the waterfall soft look in the phone. Some of them can do it. |

The dreamy out of focus look works very well on this, there are no important details to worry about. good plan. I tend to find the circles distractions, I am not sure what in the optics caused them and thinking about them tends to distract from the image in my opinion. In an image like this, I think it is the verticals that matter to determine if it is straight and the verticals seem fine to me. |

I wish I knew immediately that this was the whistle on a steam locomotive, but if you zoom out and show more it looses its impact, so I am going to go with you have it correct. Personally, I think I would like a faster shutter speed to put more definition in the steam. |

I agree, I like the idea of a crop, but not so severe. I would take the top down relatively close to the barrel and crop both sides leaving more on the left so the dog is running into the image. I think the rope is an important part of the story and a leading line directly into the action. I like the image and the story. |

Speaking of being sharp, the reflection of the first boat seems tack sharp and sharper than the boat itself. I don't know how to explain that, maybe it is just me. That camera and lens at those settings should be sharp, but there is not much to focus on in the center of the image where most of us tend to focus. Frankly I think it is focused where you want it on the first boat. I love boats in mist and this shot is a good one. |

I think I like the image just the way it is. I like the symmetry that is planned as good as it can be. I like how you have brought up the light on the banisters to provide strong lines into the image. I like that the first row of cars is just above the strong line across the image. I can understand wanting more contrast in the middle of the image, but the image is not about the cars and trees, it is about the architecture. If you could get more contrast in just the window frames and two pillars just outside that might be a plus. We would know when we saw it.
I am just a little curious if this is really a smart phone picture and the 15mm is really 1.5mm, the camera settings seem unusual for a "big camera". |

Perfectly timed, I suspect you were using a burst mode. Some cameras now even have a burst where you push the shutter down 1/2 way and go all the way down at the moment you think is right. You will end up with a series of shots before and after when you thought it was correct and can pick one for your final. I like what you did, but am wondering if a crop in some would be even stronger, perhaps with the plane 1/3 from the top and 1/3 from one side or the other, but larger in what we are looking at. |

The line of the sky to the landscape is so sharp that I thought you had replaced the sky and as you did it you had thrown away a few pixels of the foreground layer, but that would not of worked well with the palm fronds. I guess the explanation is the infrared capture. Well done. I like the suggestion of cropping both sides some perhaps to a vertical or square or whatever works. |

Excellent capture in either color or mono. The view between the trees is narrower than I remember. Perhaps I need to go back. It is a great place. I like the way you tucked that rock on the left between the branches of the tree on the right to complete both sides of the landscape without letting them intersect. I suspect that took some planning. There has been discussion about the contrast in the sky. I can agree with bringing up more contrast in most of the sky, but I think the greater contrast only at the very top stands out and distracts a bit. This small detail is the only thing I can even suggest as a potential improvement to think about. |
