Sometimes with monos of birds in reeds or high grass, the vegetation just starts to look distracting. You have completely overcome that with the vegetation both sides of the bird soft. You explained it with your comment about the moving boat and pan with the bird. I think this is a great shot. I think, yes as John said some work on the bird to selectively change tones to stand out is worthwhile. I would consider cropping the bottom of the image some and also the right. Perhaps enough to remove the third hump. I think the focus on the bird improves. |

I have trouble relating to this image. It means a lot to Stuart, but foreign to me. I understand anything to achieve more depth of field in the low light would result in more noise other rhan perhaps focus stacking, but I think under the circumstances I would prefer to let the screen go out of focus and focus about midway back on the fan. I still am having trouble seeing the color and I understand not wanting to lose the sepia feel of the image. In Nik Silver Efex you could convert to mono and stay with sepia, I am not sure if this works with other conversion software, but I would think you could do it. I am going to try to check that out with Lightroom. I am starting to do a lot of conversions using it. |

An interesting study in the statement often made that the eye is drawn to the light tones in an image. My guess is that none of us were drawn to the snow covered and much lighter background. Personally, I think contast draws us more. Speaking of that, I like this image with the contrasting light curved lines drawing us to the Gondolier, although I think of a gondolier with a pole in a much smaller boat. I would like to see more contrast between him and what is behind him. He is the main picture element and gets a little lost. I suggest lightening his face some and getting the tone of his jacket to contrast with the bow of the boat. |

I interpret this as an artistic view that emphasises the bleak look of the flower gardens in winter. I would not know what this was however without your title. Understanding that, I feel I understand what you were trying to accomplish and you did it. On the flip side as a standard monochrome, yes there is a lot blocked up shadow. |

Excellent detail in bird, prey, and the spray of water drops. Tonal range is excellent with all picture elements standing out well. An excellent nature wildlife image. Since you don't have the top of the wing, you might consider cropping in even more a bit. As some say, make it look like you didn't want the whole wing. |

A problem I did not seem to be able to fix was the lack of detail in the banner on the left. For some reason, the capture with a cell phone had none or a least very little. The original did not even have the small amount of detail at the bottom of the banner. I like the image, perhaps I should try something else again. |
