19 Nov 20 Reply These are rarely seen in PSA exhibitions or competitions. There are not a lot of people with the opportunity to shoot them and they are the most fun to shoot when there are small chicks. This provides a very narrow window on most lakes. Our Lake Ada in Minnesota is typically blessed with three to five nests and the photography of chicks is limited to about two to three weeks typically in June. They don't seem to mind our boats or kayaks much however and pretty much go about their activities with us close enough with a 300mm plus lens. Nov 21st
19 Nov 20 Comment Hard to get that many spots on a sensor. I hope you managed to clean it. Modern cameras seem to do pretty well cleaning themselves. Perhaps you changed lenses in a dusty environment. We were taking pictures at Horseshoe bend in AZ once and when we left after shooting, the tripod legs were red with dust. In the Serengeti, you generally can't safely change lenses. Best to have two bodies. Hard to recover once you shoot the image, but sometimes you can purposely use a filter to create a paining like masterpiece. I did this with an image that ended up in the PSA annual calendar. You might try playing with it. If you do, I would agree with cropping the left some. Nov 18th
19 Nov 20 Comment There are always a lot of choices of where to crop these reflection shots. I rather like the crop at the bottom, perhaps a little more space under the rock, but this is fine. I might also like a little space to the right of the rock, but this is fine also. The crops used puts the shoreline nice on about a 1/3 line. It is interesting to move the image around and see what a crop to the sky would do. I think I agree with John, I don't think the sky was needed. Your process made this tack sharp throughout. Nov 18th

19 Nov 20 Comment I am not a fan of out of focus foregrounds which was probably the only way you could get this shot with the chicks sharp which you accomplished. I would crop from the bottom to minimize the out of focus nest. There is little you can do with the sky in this shot. Norm's suggestion would probably make it less intrusive, but I suspect you want it in color. I don't think there was much you could do to minimize this taking the shot. It looks like moving either left or right would of been about the same. Nov 18th
19 Nov 20 Comment A nice job of telling the story in one picture. You needed the statue and the house. It is always hard to tell what the other options were for an image, but I might of preferred if the shot was from somewhere to the right of where you were standing. I would like to see a little more of the front of the statue and get the hedge out from in front of the house a bit. Perhaps some trees would then block the view of the house. Nov 18th

64 Nov 20 Reply Helen, congratulations, you are obviously doing some very creative things. You need to expect some variability in the acceptance of these type of images. I notice in judging them that the judges scores can vary significantly. Not everyone buys into the same compositions. Nov 23rd
64 Nov 20 Reply I am not sure what three judges will make of this. If just one makes a decision in a short time that it is not what he is looking for, it probably will not do all that well. It is pretty out of the mainstream of what they expect. There are things in our photography that we really enjoy and we like to share, but that doesn't mean the judges will like it. I wish you well, let me know how it does. I hope it does well. Nov 19th
64 Nov 20 Comment Wow, am I late to this discussion, sorry. I hope there is still space for more. This lost a lot from the strong subject of the cross that is now missing, but if I didn't know about the cross this is still a strong story about a mining town. The busyness of the image is a plus to tell the story, the wires are important. You needed to have a steep hill in the street to make the story strong. The cemetery tell the end of the story. I immediately knew this was a mining town and guessed West Virginia, but it could be a lot of towns within a few 100 miles or so of where it really is. Well done. You told the story of those towns. 64 Nov 20 Comment It is interesting the different takes we have on this. I frankly don't worry about the face in an image like this. The tone you picked works very well. Yes, the near white just over the tractor is a bit much, but being a RAW file easy to subdue a bit and it is fine the way it is. In this size and resolution, I can't really tell if there is any "noise" in that dust, but you might check for it. There are lots of ways to take it out if there are and with a selection, you don't need to worry about a little loss of detail. Nov 18th
64 Nov 20 Comment You saw the potential to make your work into another creation and it worked very well. I need to have my daughter come to the site. She is a big RBG fan. She will enjoy it, but she won't be able to comment. Nov 18th
64 Nov 20 Comment I like your tones and contrasts, Contrast is not high, but seems appropriate for the image. The only thing I can think of to consider as an improvement is that you have things so nearly perfect for horizontal and vertical lines, but not exact. The horizontal lines go downhill to the right very slightly, you can't fix it with rotation, you need to distort it a bit with some transform as an example. Nov 18th
64 Nov 20 Comment I was thinking about do the pixels on the left add or are they a distraction and read Jerry's comments that he likes them. I am not sure. You did an amazing job of creating motion that is very pleasing. Well done. Nov 18th
64 Nov 20 Reply Stuart, if this is just one tone, yes it is still a mono, which just means one tone. My experience with these in competitions is that extreme tones do not judge very well. If that equates with peoples opinions that probably means not a great idea. I would not even think of this as a mono and I like what you did. I would not submit it as a mono however. Nov 18th
64 Nov 20 Comment Frankly, I think a mono of a rose should look just like the one you created. Beautiful. The sepia tone helps to maintain that soft feel to the image. This lends itself perfectly to the square presentation and the thin border sets it off very nicely. I think I like the tone and contrasts just the way they are. Nov 18th
64 Nov 20 Reply You can also use the software to put sepia on any preset you start with. Click to open up toning and I believe the sepia I like to start with is number 11, but you can see little bits of what the effect will look like. Nov 18th
64 Nov 20 Reply Thanks for visiting our group and for your comments. Yes, I did not plan the man in the shot very well. A lot of people walk through this area and you need to plan around it. I didn't do it very well. Nov 18th
64 Nov 20 Reply Yes, this is Arizona. The city of Sedona is an awesome place to photograph, but this is one of a lot of peoples favorite places. It is an afternoon place. I would like to take it closer to June 21 when the sun would be farther north and the shadow on the right less severe. Maybe the right amount and placement of cloud cover would take care of it. A lot of these shots process to remove or reduce the shadow. This is taken from a place called "Red Rock Crossiong". You need to pay a nominal amount to park here but it is worth it. There are numerous places for worthwhile shots of the cathedral as it is called. Nov 18th
64 Nov 20 Reply I agree, it also makes the person a little more significant. That was a good comment also. It would of been better if I let him walk a little farther. I guess these comments are one of the reasons DD is so valuable. Nov 18th
