I think you will find that taking good pictures and learning to process them are both important to being a good digital photographer. There are a number of options to learning Photoshop. |

Good subject and light for a silhouette. The lighting behind it is great. It would be nice to get a little more of the subject to show in the silhouette and out of the surrounding shadows, but if you moved your camera lower, the sun would be behind the bucket and I know that is not what you wanted. You did a good job of accomplishing your objective. |

I like the way I can understand this as an abstract of very simple bicycle shapes arranged very carefully with consistent spacing to form abstract patterns. The bicycles near the edges make it clear what the abstract is formed from. You did very well to get the well lit sculpture with black around and behind it. Well done. |

You have captured a stunning image. I really like iconic images like the lower falls looking dramatically different than what we normally see. I like the river leading in on the top and the bowl formed below the falls opening up to be filled with snow. I don't think I have any suggestions. |

I don't know that I want to make the image narrower, but I should get whatever is in the upper right corner out of there. A very light crop or selection and content aware fill should take care of it. |

You didn't indicate your shutter speed, but I would prefer the shot to look sharper. You indicated you added a "painterly filter" perhaps it would be better to add the filter to the overall image but mask it off perhaps the head of the horse or more of the horse. I really like the enthusiasm the horse is showing after being let out in the snow. |

I think this is a very nice image that benefitted from the soft light and has excellent balance with the fountain at about the lower left third and the shrine at the upper right third. Like any image, I suspect you could make this pop more with a number of techniques and it could probably stand a light crop on the right with perhaps some off the top or bottom to maintain the aspect ratio but I also think it is fine the way it is. |

I think John is right. Using some perspective correction type tools might allow you to straighten the line of buildings without bringing the bottom of the image up to the boots. |

Frankly, I agree with you. I have used the color version more but decided to try a monochrome version. I like them both, but that sky favors the color version. I also tried putting a filter on the color version once and it bombed. |

I think I like it pretty much the way it is. I like completing the scene showing lots of bikes in the background as well as with the group up front. I might suggest straightening the image a bit since it is downhill on the right, but I would not want to get the lower edge closer to their boots, so I think you leave it the way it is. It is effective that the areas of highest contrast are with the bikes and people in the group which highlights them with the lower contrast rest of the image providing background. |

This is inherently a tranquil setting and it is interesting that you used the word in your description and we are all picking up on it. Boats like this are inherently tranquil and the still water with reflections add to it. the clouds in the sky complete the scene. I personally am not a fan in most cases of the very dramatic skies and like this one. It is interesting that I don't think you have much of the very light tones. That adds to the tranquil feeling also but is not like we normally process our monochromes. Works for this image. That said it might be interesting to bring up the light tones in the bottoms of the boats where you can see into them to put more contrast in that part of the image. |

I think I like the color image better, but I read what others say and have another suggestion. I agree the lake in the monochrome seems to be a distraction, but it seems it does not in the color. I think cropping the top of the mono to about where the color is cropped, or maybe remove just a little more keeps us where you want us better. You might go back to using the color version, but I think I would like it better not cropping in on the left like was done in the mono. |

He is a very interesting subject and perfect for a monochrome treatment. His eyes are what they are and perhaps just consider it part of who he was. I once had a picture taken from one safari vehicle of another man with his head out of the top of another vehicle and he had a couple days growth of beard and a scarf tied around his head to protect from the sun. It wasn't great until I grunged him up as much as I could. This image did very well. I retired a print mounted on a 16 x 20 mount by sending it to him and his wife where they lived in Texas. They loved it. He probably looks as old now as he looked in that image in 2009. |

I first thought it was a closeup of a real outlet, but that was very rapidly obvious that it was a very large reproduction of an ordinary outlet. How interesting everyday objects can become when taken out of their normal context of size and location. I would take it the way it is but I think I would simplify the black background removing some light spots and lines. This image would be interesting in any slideshow, album or whatever. |
