Speaking of the moon we had some really special ones in January and now in February we have no full moon at all. I think that happens about once every 40 or 50 years and only in February when it is not a leap year. I like the suggestions for two images in this, but I think I would stick with this pretty much the way it is for image one, but there is a very nice image two of the lights leading to the capital. with the left cropped away. I don't think I would want to loose any of the tail lights, so I would not crop it as close as some suggest. Yes, that leaves the 500 and most of that building. If you want and it is not for photo travel, you might just want to get rid of the 500 and perhaps the sign on the building. Your image without the moon showing its face is an example of making lemonade out of lemons. |

I think I like seeing the entire bucket, but I am not a close crop person. It is a pretty interesting bucket that I think is part of the story. You have the skin and bucket color just right as far as I'm concerned. You could do some selective processing to open up the shadows on her cloak and reducing blue on the snow, but I would not change the white balance of anything other than the snow. I think white balance is just right for the subject. I like the image.
I enjoyed visiting Sun City Festival last week. Shirley and I did a critique session for them. |

Some of the "best" shots of Mesa Arch capture a starburst of the sun under the arch. That is what a lot of people are looking for. Your image is a wonderful image, but judges have seen a lot of these and it is hard to know what they will be looking for. I was there one morning about 1/2 hour before sunrise. You couldn't get a tripod anywhere near a good spot and people were not about to move. Just before the shooting would get good a busload of Asian tourists came in and every one of them wanted their picture taken under or over the arch. It was bedlam. ACCC was having a theme category of "Humor with the title read to the judges" I went off to the left and took a shot from above of the photographers and titled it "Sunrise solitude at Mesa Arch" and received an Honorable Mention. Your way of dealing with it was probably superior to mine. |

The trees on the right are important. These trees are typical of the location and set the place. The building on the hillside immediately said Positano to me and the trees confirmed it. I really like this place on the Amalfi coast and you have done a very good job capturing it. I sort of like the space you have provided on the left, but yes, that white building is probably a distraction. Frankly the whites of the restaurant (if that is what it is) immediately grab your attention and then I don't mind wandering once I have enjoyed the primary subject. I am not a fan of turning white things into gray to make them less prominent. A crop is probably the best choice if you feel it is needed, but I think I would leave it as is. |

I think you have made an excellent choice of camera settings. This is a very nice image for the conditions you were in. The high ISO and near wide open aperture gave you the shutter speed you needed for a sharp image. I don't think I did anywhere near as well. Not sure I was on the trip the same day, but we had similar conditions and I didn't do anywhere near as well. |

Generally images taken at car shows have a lot of stuff to compete. In this case I like the stuff. I will call it showing the environment the car is in. Not sure that makes a lot of sense, but in some images I like wandering around with my eyes taking in things that might otherwise be considered distractions. The color and prominence of the primary car holds my interest and I wander around to look at other things. They are all things that compliment the primary theme of the image. I like the image. |

Interesting question, I guess that could be the case. I don't go past 1600 unless the light is really low. I rather suspect I was focused on the second light although I am not sure of that. I have experimented with repletion shots and sometimes do them with limited depth of field on purpose, but I usually don't like the result. That works if you are trying to focus on one or two of the objects, but that might be great for people, but usually not for things. I think I can get away with a moderately soft background of this image with most people. I just entered it in an exhibition or two. |

I really like the light on the field and bales. The clouds are a little much for me. This is a very dramatic image and does well the way it is, but I would consider another version that concentrates more on the field and the bales. I am thinking crop the sky pretty much like Jerry Funk suggested, but I am not a panoramic fan and would crop the left and right to concentrate on the bales in the left half or 2/3s of the image. That is another image, but I think I would like it. |

I think the crop on the mono version is probably about as good as you can get it, perhaps a little tight on top and bottom. I wish you could of captured a bit more depth of field. You probably would need to go to ISO 1600 and up to f/11 or so. If the shutter speed gets low, I shoot a bunch of them and look for the best. I just thought of something that might be interesting, if you are concerned about the depth of field, you could crop away most of the leaf on the top that is partially out of focus. After all you cropped away most of the one on the left. I like putting a stroke or strokes on this image as you did. |
