Not a lot of wooden boats around, but I recognized this immediately just like Tracy did. An excellent example of the result of peeling and painting many times over the years. A sense of age. Reminded me immediately of a prize boat of an aunt of mine when I saw it discarded somewhere by a later owner. Sad but beautiful. An abstract that is really an actual unmodified image. It should appeal to anyone with a wooden boating background. Mine is almost exclusively fiberglass, but I remember the wooden boats in our family and was tempted to build one at one point in my life. |

Your ability to see the potential of this seed pod is commendable. You positioned it to get a great reflection which makes the image. If you intend to exhibit this image you might consider putting a white stroke around it so the judges know where the edge of the composition is. This may contribute and it may not. Sometimes it just becomes a distraction. I like the depth of field you picked with f/8. I believe that you have a pretty high end camera and you might find you can effectively use more than ISO 100 with little or no additional noise. The allows more depth of field or faster shutter speeds. We normally think the lower the ISO the less noise, but that is not always the case, look at the signal to noise ratio on the attached graph from a high end Canon camera. This shows ISO 800 and 50 about the same and little given up from 100 going to 400. Something to think about or experiment with. |

This is an excellent monochrome conversion. Good representation of all the zones from black to white with textures or lack of textures everywhere that they can contribute to the image. The comparison of the girl and old man is great as Tracy has already pointed out. I am not a tight crop person, and not knowing what was just outside the frame, I think I would like to see a bit more space under the girl's chin and to the right of the end of the pipe, but these are minor. I am not sure the vertical line above the pipe in the middle of the image contributes, but this is a great photo travel shot and you must leave it in the image for PTD. |

I read Tracy's comments and agree with all of them. This is a very nice image. Three is perfect and they are all in different poses. One thing to consider, in images like this there is nothing that needs to be horizontal or vertical. If there is enough space prior to the crop, you might try slight rotations of the image CW or CCW. I am thinking it might look better without the horizontal alignment. It just might be worth a try. Very nice! |

I like this comment! Why didn't I see that she looked like a chess piece standing in the middle of a square. |

Timing can be everything, and when we think we have a good shot it pays to take time and a number of shots over some period of time and from various positions. This is an interesting image, but I think I would prefer to let the woman walk out of the scene and try to wait for the two boys to move enough to separate. The woman walking just behind them doesn't really add either. On the image the way it is, I think I would crop up from the bottom to remove the black square on the right and put the game and boys near the bottom third. I don't like removing foreground pavements and textures, but consider the partial black square a distraction. |

Reminds me of a medieval town gate I posted a number of years ago and a couple of the study group people talked about the perspective problems. Another looked up pictures of the gate on the web and said "Stan is spot on." I suspect this building is twisted and turned just like you shot it. The sky is a good tone, the true blacks and near blacks are abundant. You might want to try to get more contrast in some of the tones of the building, but this is a nice mono conversion. I suspect you could easily get the sky to be more dramatic, but I think we are tending to over do that look and while it might be interesting to give it a try, I like it the way it is. |

A nice simple composition. An image with a lot of near black and a lot of mid-tone with not much of some other zones. I guess that is what a silhouette is. You might want to crop a bit different to get the horizon out of the middle. Some judges will react to this. The noise, particularly on the right gives it that retro look that it sounds like you wanted. If so this is right on. Cellphones seem to love about f/2.2, and with the small sensor size and resulting 4mm focal length, the depth of field is still adequate. |

I like your crop with the diagonal composition. You have a good tonal range from true black to near white with a lot of mid-tones which looks very good. the textures are interesting. A good composition. Seems like an abstract with realism, that is interesting to study. I think this should do well in exhibitions. |

The f/6.3 gave a pleasing depth of field, I like that his paw is slightly out of focus. You handled the high ISO with an reasonable amount of noise visible, like at this size, I don't think I see any. A wonderful portrait composition with good eyes and expression. A catch light might add something, but these large eyes do well the way they are. |

An awesome natural symmetric image in either color or mono. Tonal range is wide with both a lot of white and also a lot of true black. Little mid-tones just to prove that we don't always need good representation of them to have a great mono image. Monochrome doesn't provide a lot of level changes through the range which might contribute to I think there are visible transitions to the tonalities in the fountains. Perhaps these could be blurred a bit, otherwise I think this is about perfect. Incredible that you found bushes on both sides that continued the near perfect symmetry of the scene. Well done! |
