Thanks Ian. I was going to take the shot with just the couple on the bench as foreground when all the others just turned up. |

I didn't spot that merger at the time, Bill. I agree. It would have been better if I had moved a little to the right. |

Ian, a great portrait of this young lady. You have a way of interacting with people that puts them at ease and allows you to get shots like this. This has been well lit with no serious shadows and the halo did not worry me at all. I think your set-up shot is interresting because she is showing some of her own personality in the sparkle of her smile, and I would suggest the attached crop of that one. |

Erik, this is a great capture of the parents feeding their two chicks. My first thought ws that the chicks do not stand out from the foreground (sand?), but then I realised that this is simply natural camouflage at work, protecting the chicks from predators. |

Well caught! I love the pose and the expressions on their faces. The foreground tells of their environment and the background is subdued but has nice colour. Both animals are sharp and your subtle vignette works really well. |

That's exactly what I was thinking of, Isaac. The lines did not bother me at all. |

Every farmer had a wooden stand at the farm entrance on which he would place his full milk churns (pails) for collection by horse and cart. He would return later to collect the empty churns ready for the next day. The stand was at the same height as the platform of the cart which collected them. Those were the days! |

Bill, the thing that catches my eye is the tall shadow just filling in the windowless gap on the building at the right. Perfect timing! Great correction of perspective. |

An interesting viewpoint Isaac, and I think that the two silhouetted spectators really create the interest in the composition. I think it is important to have them as full silhouettes. I would be inclined to crop a little off the left to remove the light patch at the top left corner, a little off the right to remove the beginnings of another spectator on the right edge, and a little off the bottom to remove the light patch bottom left. |

Gary, first of all congratulations on your 50th wedding anniversary. Good planning and an excellent result, achieving exactly what you planned. I love the composition and the colours and would not change anything. |

Gary, I think the people were from a group of veteran vehicle enthusiasts - possibly to do with traction engines. These were the steam driven road vehicles that pulled threshing machines from farm to farm in the harvesting season. At each farm they would then power the threshing machine using a long leather belt running on the engine flywheel. A farm worker would use a pitchfork to throw the cut wheat into the top of the machine while other workers threw more cut wheat up to him. The wheat seed was collected in sacks while the stalks were coompressed ito bales. Yes, I am old enough to have seen it done!
As for the Palouse, yes I have been there and enjoyed every minute of it. I can see the similarity. A shot in the fall at sunset might be interesting. The sun would be on the left. |
