4 Jan 23 Reply Thanks Ian. I agree with you about that rock lower left. Somehow it just makes the composition. I think it creates a focal point for the eye to go to. Jan 19th
4 Jan 23 Reply I think the view you have is just right. If you were more head-on you would lose some of the calf. Jan 16th
4 Jan 23 Comment Agreed, Bill. It's a fun image and you declared it as such.
Autonomous flight systems for hot air balloons? Now that's an interesting thought! Having spent my working life in the aircraft industry, I'll have to see what I can come up with! Ha Ha

4 Jan 23 Comment Bill, you certainly did some work on the original to get to your final image. The only original part of the image seems to be the buildings and the piece of land they are standing on. Well done Vella, for spotting that there is no pilot in the balloon. On a purely personal note, I would not be happy to insert a dominant image component that was not mine, although I have no problems in using software to move things and distort them. Jan 12th
4 Jan 23 Comment Ian, I hope you are recovering well. This is a very 'eye-catching' image. I think you chose the right moment to press the shutter as this has caught a powerful visual effect. It is interesting to read what different people see in this. To me, I am looking down twin tubes, and it makes me think of looking down the twin jet pipes of a combat aircraft! Jan 11th
4 Jan 23 Reply Gary, I tried blending one of the shorter exposure shots but did not like the result. Maybe I need to try again.
As for foreground, there just wasn't any unless you count these two men who arrived just as we were packing up!

4 Jan 23 Comment Erik, this is an example of very fast reactions on your part and a very responsive camera. Well focussed and exposed with no background distractions. A great example of hoodlum activity in the natural world! In these circumstances, you cannot choose your composition so well done for capturing this moment. Jan 8th
4 Jan 23 Comment Excellent title, Vella. Good exposure control to get all the detail in the bright snow in strong sunshine. Excellent sharpness in the animals too. In deference to Bill, I don't have a problem with the snow. It looks white on my monitor in the sunlit area. The shadows may have a slight blue cast but this happens under a blue sky and is quite normal.
I just copied the image into PS and looked at the info and this confirms that the sunlit snow has typical RGB values of 194/194/199 - very slight blue cast. The shadow areas give typical RGB values of 73/80/107 - a noticeable blue cast, but quite natural.

4 Jan 23 Comment Interesting use of iPhone photography an associated apps. A very bright and colourful image which is well balanced and would brighten any room in which it might be hung. Happily the flag shows an onshore wind which will bring the balloon back to the land and safety! Jan 8th
4 Jan 23 Comment Isaac, I am amazed at the sharpness you have got with an equivalent 1500 mm focal length and only 1/40 second on a widy day. You must have had a very sturdy tripod. Good shot of this owl feeding its young. However, I think that maybe the sharpening has gone just a little too far. The tree trunk at the left looks more natural in the original than in the processed image. I agree about the remarkable abilities on the new AI software now available. Topaz and ON1 are very good indeed. Jan 8th
4 Jan 23 Comment Gary, there is not much difference between the iPhone and the Canon in terms of colour, although the iPhone does seem a little lighter. However, I see significant haloes on the iPhone shot but not on the Canon shot. This is almost certainly due to processing, possibly automatically done in the phone shot, but not in the Canon shot.
As a picture, I would crop out about half of the foreground snow and then apply the Shadows/Highlights adjustment in PS to bring out the shadow detail.
