Isaac, I too saw the building as looking like a ship. That was in my mind when I took the picture. |

Happy Christmas to you too, Ian, and to all my friends in DD04. This is a great capture under difficult circumstances. There is no distracting background and the lighting is just right. Considering the ISO is 8000, there is remarkably little noise. I know they have to wear microphones these days, and they are usually small and discreet when the actors are moving around, but in a straight photograph they tend to stand out. For a record shot, you have to leave the microphone in, but I thought it would be nice to clone it out. I then tried the image in Topaz Sharpen AI and got best results from the Motion Blur setting. I think the fingers are blurred because of movement rather than focus. The effect was to make the face and hair a bit more crisp. I hope you like it. |

Erik, that is a very colourful image and shot from a good viewpoint. The big balloon in the bottom left really holds in the composition and there is a lot to look at in the sky with all the other balloons receding into the distance. I think you have captured the feel of a great experience. |

Vella, firstly I don't think it is over-sharpened. The houses are very sharp but I see no tell-tale signs of over-sharpening. You have done a nice job on taking the warmth out of the whites. It looks much cleaner and fresher than the original. Gary's question of what story are you trying to tell made me look more at the composition and I feel that my eye is being drawn two ways. Because of the curve of the building line, my eye wants to go both left and right, from foreground to background. I would prefer to crop the receding houses on the left so that I start at the nearest house and move along the line to the right and on to the hills beyond. I would take out some of the foreground and some of the sky too. |

What a remarkable record of wild animal behaviour. The body language of the bird receiving the preening is absolutely priceless. Is it two males courting a female or the other way round? Either way it must be unusual. Or maybe, as Vella suggests, one is a child of the other two. Whatever it is, it is a great shot. It is also very sharp and with good control of depth of field. A picture to hang on the wall.
I prefer the wider shot as it includes something of the environment. |

Gary, this location is crying out to be photographed. I really do like your composition and the inclusion of the sun just creeping over the mountain. The colours are wonderful. I would like to see a little more colour and brightness in the rocks so I took it into ON1 RAW 2023 for some adjustment. Using the new selection facility in ON1 I selected the mountain side and foliage and used Color Enhancer to increase Temperature and Tint slightly to add warmth, then using the same selection I used Curves to brighten and add contrast. Finally I used Curves overall to brighten the whole image slightly. Interestingly, I was able to minimise haloes by moving the Levels slider in the mask on the Curves adjustment. |
