4 Aug 22 Reply Thanks for your input Bill. The black sea-ccoal in the foreground is part of the story on the north-east coast. Coal seams are exposed on the sea bed not far off shore so finely divided coal is frequently washed up on the beach, and I wanted to include that in the picture. However, your crop shows a different interpretation which is, of course, just as valid. Aug 26th

Yes, the sea coal adds to the story. I remember seeing people collecting it in sacks when I was a small boy. It was free fuel for those that could not afford to buy coal for heating. It must have been hard work though, as it would be wet and so very heavy.

4 Aug 22 Reply Gary, when I posted it I wondered if I had left too much sky in. I like your crop on this one. Aug 12th
4 Aug 22 Reply Vella, the first heatwave was over 102 deg F. That only lasted a couple of days and then we had nice warm weather but no rain. We now have a second heatwave forecast to last longer but not be quite so hot. It was hot yesterday (Thursday) and the day before. Today it has been 84 deg F but expected to continue for another two days, but still no rain. There is talk of water shortage and hosepipe bans.

On the north-east coast where we live, we are more used to 70 - 75 deg F as a hot day!

4 Aug 22 Comment Ian, well done for taking the shot in such weather. The water droplets on the flower create a lovely atmosphere, and I particularly like that one just about to fall off the petal. I was quite happy with your crop, but Isaac's crop looks good too. I think it comes down to personal preference. Yours is more atmospheric while Isaac's is more imtimate. Aug 12th
4 Aug 22 Comment Erik, great shot and very sharp. The eyes really grab the viewer's attention. I like the very out of focus background - must have been some distance away to be that soft on f/11. I can't make up my mind about the feet. I think this is fine for a pictorial image but have no experience in Nature images so can't comment on that. Aug 12th
4 Aug 22 Reply Gary, I chose that one because of the framing. However, here is another, two shots later, with the lens at 7 mm and the exposure 1/800 at f/8 with ISO 320. There is a bit more space at the right. Done in aabout ten minutes in ON1 RAW, there may still be some residual wide-angle distortion. Aug 12th
4 Aug 22 Comment Great action shot, Vella. The image does look a bit dark and I go along with the view that a higher ISO would have helped. I find that Topaz DeNoise AI and ON1 RAW NoNoise AI are both excellent at getting rid of high ISO noise while still preserving the details. I wonder how the cormorant manged to eat that great big catfish. Aug 10th
4 Aug 22 Comment The basic composition with the curved boardwalk with the approaching couple, together with the clouds of steam is what really makes this image. The adjustments bring out the best in the image, but without that 'seeing eye' to find the right composition, no amount of adjustment would have worked. It's a great shot and the variations offered in the PP above really bring out the best in it. Aug 10th
4 Aug 22 Comment Good creative thinking to frame the barn with the fence. I like the replacement sky and also the crop to reduce the amount of blank fence. The diagonal aperture between the parts of the fence gives the image a good dynamic feel. Aug 10th
4 Aug 22 Comment What a great place to visit! I like Isaac's crop as it places that big gas valve in the right position to be the centre of attention. I think the colours in the processed image are a little too strong and prefer something closer to the original. The colours in the original bring out the feeling of dilapidation much more than those in the processed image. Regarding the b/w, I go along with the general view that a little more contrast will give the image the impact it deserves. This is an unusual image as it has great potential both as colour and as b/w. Aug 9th
