Isaac, it is a super sequence. You just got the wrong judge. As a club judge myself, I would have rated any of these very highly. Judges need to recognise that in any photojournalism shots you can't choose the background or the overall composition. Neither can you manipulate the image other than by cropping and by adjusting contrast and brightness. When you are shooting rapid action, you get what you get. To have got this sequence, pin sharp and well centred shows great skill and quick reactions. |

Ian, my first thought was that I would have liked the long rock to lead in from the bottom left corner, but I can appreciate your concern about the rising tide. On looking longer at the picture, though, I realise that I rather like the line if the rock leading directly to the reflection of the lighthouse and then on to the lighthouse itself. However, that leaves a foreground area on the left with not a lot of interest. My interpretation of your image is to crop some off the left side to bring the lighthouse off-centre, and then take a little off the top to maintain a reasonable aspect ratio. |

There comes a time when we all start looking for something a bit lighter but still with top class performance. The Olympus OMD EM1 Mark III is a very nice camera and the lenses are very sharp. Paula found she needed lighter kit some time ago and bought the EM1 Mark I, and later upgraded to the Mark II. I was so impressed by the sharpness and the reduced weight that I traded in my Nikon and went for Micro Four-Thirds too, but I chose the Lumix G9 which is just as sharp.
Your image of the oyster catcher is excellent. It is sharp, the black feathers have detail and the whites are not blown out even in the strong sun. You may be interested in going on to Facebook and 'liking' the OlympusUK page. They have lots of things going on which you can either watch live or go to later. They are very informative about the various camera functions. Paula can give you more information if you email me separately. |

Actually, I like the picture as you present it Vella. Like Isaac and Bill, I feel it would be better with a more subdued background, but toning down that bright area is extremely difficult. You risk losing detail and losing the bright hair on the side of her head. The lady has a very striking face which I find quite compelling and I think it is strong enough to hold the viewer's attention. You did a very good job of getting a picture here in very difficult lighting. It is a classic case of needing fill-in flash if you have a pop-up flash on the camera, and if you remember to use it! |

Congratulations Bill on the success of this image. It is in the style of one of the old masters, but I my knowledge of the subject is not good enough to say which one. The painting effect is very good and the colours fit the style extremely well. It would be nice to know which software you used to achieve this effect. |

I can think of anther possible title for this image starting with, "Oh ....!" It's a superb set of action shots of this mishap. I like all the shots but my favourite is Original 1 as it shows the horse clear of the jump stand but still including that in the image, and it gives the viewer a heart-stopping indication of what is about to happen. Focus is accurate with just a gentle blur on the background. I'm pleased the young lady was not hurt. |

Well, I can see why photographers like to get to this shrine! Like Jack, I like the bold colours and the recession with the path leading round the corner at the far end. I also like the slight waviness in the path. It is not dead straight and the slight waviness adds a rather nice human touch in the construction. I guess it would be too much to have someone in a contrasting green coat just going round the corner at the end! Nice one Joe. I don't see me ever getting there now so I'll just have to enjoy your image. |
