That's a nice one Isaac. The thin segment of blue closes off the red very nicely. Without the blue at the edge, the red would apparently go on indefinitely. The segmental shape fits very well with the other curves in the image. Thanks for the suggestion. |

Hi Ian
I too wanted to do something about the thin strip of blue on the right, but if I were to crop it out I would lose some or all of the triangular shadow on the red bit. I've played around with various crops and can't get anything that I like better. Maybe I should have left a bit more blue on the right to balance things better. |

Hi Ian. Thanks for your nice comment. It is indeed a long time since we last met. I hope you are enjoying life to the full, and it's nice to see that you share my choice of the Lumix G9 as a great camera. |

You are right, Bill. I should have been more careful with the selection to keep the yellow out of the sky. |

Ian, this is just so typical of the Lake District. The house is well placed in the composition and the curved drystone wall leads the eye nicely into the picture. The light on the distant fell is soft and gentle and completes the picture. I agree with Joe and Isaac that maybe you should crop out about a third of the sky. It might also be worth just applying a touch of darkening and more contrast to the sky using Curves and a gradient mask. It was bad luck that it rained all the time, but it isn't called the Lake District for nothing, and all that water has to come from the sky!!! |

Another excellent nature shot Erik. The butterfly is very sharp and clearly defined. The background is totally blurred and non-distracting, but I feel that the green leaves are stil rather dominant. I would be happy just to crop off the bottom to just above the lower right leaf. |

Thomas, if you had photographed only the pelican with the fish still visible in its beak, it would have been a superb shot. To have caught the cormorant also, with that almost human expression of frustration on its face, is absolutely brilliant. The image is sharp and there is no distracting background. It is a remarkable capture of the interraction between these two birds. |

I don't have a problem with the sky and I like the composition. The barn does seem to lack contrast though. I made a freehand feathered selection around the barn and increased the contrast using a Curves adjustment layer in Photoshop. Then I inversed the selection and darkened the outside with another Curves layer to create a subtle vignette. Next I reverted to the original selection and used a Color Balance adjustment layer to put some yellow into the highlights and blue into the shadows. Finally, I used Select>Color Range to select the brightest part of the sky to the left of the barn and used another Curves layer to darken and increase contrast just to bring back the detail. As it was a five minute adjustment, I didn't bother to shield the outside 4-pixel stroke from the adjustments. |

This is a very gentle still-life created by nature. Composition is nice with the diagonal line of the pine cones running from lower left to upper right, and the green moss placed in a strong position. I wish we could have made it to Spokane this year. It would have been good to have met you and also to to have met up again with my good friend Erik. |

Joe, I like the treatment given to the water. It adds a painterly look to the image although there is a different texture in the areas close to the masts and cables. The light streaks to the right of the boat are attractive and add a bright, cheerful feeling. The boat is registered at Auray (the AY prefix before the number on the bow). I can't interpret the text on top of the wheelhouse, but perhaps it could simply be the name of the boat. |

Hi Ian. This is excellent. Your treatment has turned a record shot into a lovely artistic rendering. Memo to self - must get back to Beamish. It's only about 40 miles north of where I live. |
