It's an interesting question. Do you go for the realistic or the aesthetic. The modern street lighting combined with low cloud gives city views a characteristic warm tone. That is how I remember the scene. However, I agree that the image looks nicer with the cool tone. Maybe somewhere between the two is a good compromise. I must take a second look. Thanks for your comment. |

Joe, I just want to echo Erik's comment (on his image dialogue) that you have done a great job running this group. It's a great group and we all learn something every month. Keep up the good work and have a great 2019. |

Isaac & Joe, you should have seen that sign before I DID tone it down!!! It was totally overpowering. However, thanks for that suggestion of using Content Aware Fill. I really didn't think of that. |

Bill, I like the railings and the shadow pattern on the steps, and I think you are right to present this as a strong black & white image. Compositionally, there are almost too many interesting things in the image, and I tried to play with various crops. However, I struggled to find something which satisfied me more. My best effort was to feature the railings more strongly at the expense of the top and some of the shadow at the right. |

Super shot, Ian with good pose and well controlled tones. The lighting is very well done indeed and I particularly like the rim lighting on the model's right cheek (ie viewer's left) just to separate his face from the shadows. The picture reminds me of Orson Wells in The Third Man - very dark and mysterious (showing my age here!). |

I can sense the feelings that you had when you encountered this scene, Erik. The light is the loveley soft light of early morning and the scenery is truly very grand. I like your composition with the path leading up to the delicately lit trees in the centre, with the other two trees to hold us in. |

David, I think it is great to do adventurous work. If you don't try things out, you will never find anything new. When I first saw this image I saw waves on the sea (Iknow the colour is wrong, but that's what it said to me). I think your use of camera movement to create an abstract of Christmas lights is great and I think you should play a bit more with this image. I cropped a little off the top and off the right and then used a Hue/Saturation layer to alter the colours. I now see a foreground of rolling freshly planted fields with new green growth just appearing, and a background of sand dunes. I'm sure it has other possibilities too. |

Wow, I want to go there! This is a great shot, and it is very impressive that it was taken on an iPhone. There is a lot going on in here and you could easily make two pictures from this image. The bottom half to just above the balcony over the red panel would make one image, and the top half from just above the red panel would make the other. Taking the image as a whole, I find the red panel just a bit too distracting so I would be inclined to tone it down. I am resisting the urge to flip it though!!! |

Joe, this could be an image from an old industrial town in the north of England. The brickwork looks old, and the doors and windows are seemingly randomly spaced, creating a fascinating picture. This image asks a lot of questions, such as why are there doors in this wall many feet off the ground? Could they be loading doors for some sort of industrial equipment? The absence of the ground in the image gives us a vertiginous feeling that the doors are a long way up, which may well be the case as you took it from the sixth floor. As for "The Kiss", I have to admit that I can't quite see it, so maybe I'm not on the same pills! |
