I have often said that we photograph the light, not the subject. Without that magic shaft of light, this would be a photograph of just a small tree in a forest. It is the light that has brought this image to life and created a truly magical effect. Well done for capturing it at just the right moment. My experience is that light like this lasts for only a very short time. The dreamy effect is created by the bright tracery of the tree branches above and to the left of the sapling. A nice way of enhancing the dreamy effect might be to revisit the image in the RAW converter and to pull the Clarity slider to the left. This can be useful to add a diffuse glow. |

This is another very restful, tranquil image, although very different from Bill's image of Thurmont Creek. The main subject is placed in a strong position and the entire image is bathed in a delightful soft pink light, complemented by gentle blue shadows in the ripples in the water and in the clouds. This is a picture to come back to and to enjoy. |

Good street photography or photo-journalism. Anyone can take photos in the street but it takes a good eye to spot good composition and the right moment to hit the shutter. The three men turned towards the camera are all nicely framed by the fencing, and there is great interaction with the others. The Hi-Vis jackets, the hard hats and the safety fence clearly date the image to the present time, which is good in journalistic terms. A similar picture taken 100 years ago would have had none of those safety items. |

This would be a very restful picture, Bill, even without the painting effect. The addition of the painting effect has changed it from restful to tranquil. For me, the fallen tree trunk in the left foreground takes me into the image, and then the golden colours of the stream take my eye to the bridge. I agree with Erik that it would be nicer without the vertical branch in front of the bridge, but I suspect that it would be difficult to get rid of it convincingly, and as it is not terribly obvious it is probably better to leave it. |

This is what I call Creative Seeing. As Ian says, most people would walk by without even noticing the possibilities. The colours and shapes of the foreground structure are a picture in themselves, but the placement of the in-focus full moon in the otherwise blank bit of sky is the icing on the cake. |

It's amazing what you can do with a bit of imagination. You have turned a fairly ordinary image into one with impact and interest. The staring eyes are quite hypnotic. You need to keep this creature under lock and key. If you met this in a lonely place at night it would scare the living daylights out of you! Brilliant! |
