Hi LuAnn,
This image is definitely an abstract one. Abstract photography is pure imagination, and it relies on your ability to see something around you creatively, not realistically. What are the objects, or what do they look like is up to the viewers' imagination to decide.
I have participated in Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit for many years, and I really enjoy abstract photography. This is the exhibition in the U.S that only specializes on abstract photography that I have known. Please visit his abstract gallery via fhis link and participate in the upcoming exhibition if you are interested in: https://nvacc.org/home/gallery/.
For this image, I guess that you captured somebody's portrait through a stained window glass. The top right part looks like the shapes of the fingers holding a camera. It's a fun abstract image that contains colors, shapes, patterns, and textures! |

Hi Ruth,
What a beautiful scene of autumn! You have visited this location at the right time when the aspen trees are in golden colors. The mountains covered by snow in the distance and the water reflection of autumn color in the foreground make the scene so inviting. Your composition is well done! I like your crop to eliminate the water in the lower right corner because it extends the beautiful water reflection.
Your post processing also brought out the cloud sky to the scene. I'd prefer to slightly brighten it since it is too dark compared to the bright color of the golden trees. Very nice image! |

Hi Mary Ann,
What a lovely scene at sunset! The colors of the sky have given the flowers and the bushes at the foreground a golden glow. I really like the view at this Big Hill lookout with colorful flowers in the foreground and land & waters in further distance.
The image is a bit soft with large aperture setting and you have explained that you have used the rented lens for the milky way shot. I am looking forward to seeing your milky way shot soon! |

Hi Joan,
The details of the rock formation is sharp, and the sun has given it the golden and brown colors. The rocks at the angle you shot have different layers that go to different directions and they attract the viewers' attention to study further. Your image is beautiful and well done! |

Thanks, Ruth, for your comments and suggestion! I agree with you that this flower in color version is beautiful with the gradation of purple shades from the center of the flower to its edges. My purpose to convert it to B&W for our local club competition, monochrome category, and I got an HM award! I also crop tighter because the flower has a tiny long stem without leaves which does not look good in full. |

Thanks, Ruth, for your comments! I agree that the center is a bit dark after I resized the image to less than 1Mb for submission. |

Hi Ruth,
The event sounds interesting and you have captured a story-telling image. The man's facial expression and the watch in his hand tell it all.
I found that the yellow background is a bit too strong, and Michael's edited version works well. The image is very sharp, and a slight crop on the left side as Ruth S.'s suggestion might help the viewers to focus more on the subject. The horizontal flip is not necessary to me. It's a beautiful image! |

Hi Michael,
Wow! Your image of milky way is excellent! The story of how you captured it is very interesting too. At first, you intended to return to a abandoned truck to shoot, then you found that the milky way was right there. Your hard work and dedication to capture this image have paid off.
The abandoned truck is a good foreground element for a nice composition, and I also like that the truck was slightly turned to the right to anchor the view. I am surprised that the flashlight on your iphone (instead of a torch light) is capable of illuminating the truck. Your PhotoPills app is also helpful for your astro photography planning, and your post processing is super.
This is a winning image! Thanks for sharing your story and technique. You really went above and beyond! |

Hi Pat,
Your post processing is very well done! The image is very sharp, and your conversion to B&W works well. I noted that you flipped the image horizontally and have struggled with the letters on the truck's door.
In my personal opinion, how we look at photos is totally different than to read English. There are some guidelines that flipping an image can help create a strong composition, but in many cases the image is much stronger without flipping it. I also feel that heading to the left gives a sense of coming home versus leaving out when heading to the right.
Your image is beautiful! I'd prefer to keep your post processing, except the flipping. |

Hi Quang,
Thanks for your comments and your suggestion. I agree with you that the top of the image could be cropped tighter but not on both sides.

Hi Steven,
The letter on top of my image is the restaurant's name Barrel & Bushel. |

Hi Jack,
Thanks for your comments and your edits. For photojournalism category, I'd want to crop tighter to eliminate the restaurant's name on the top, but I'd prefer to keep both sides as the original image. I feel that your crop on both sides is so tight and it makes the pumpkin with Washington DC truncated. |

Hi Jack,
Your image of sunset is beautiful! I especially like the unusual cloud formation resembles a flock of birds taking flight across the skies. I guess that they are Cirrus clouds that were formed up from a cruising jet aircraft when they passed through different layers of atmosphere at the altitude.
The rows of trees and the silhouettes of the trees in the middle ground have lacy shapes work for me. Nice shot! |

Hi Ruth,
Your "Living Yard Art" project is so inspiring ! There are so many awesome ideas for me to start discovering the nature and the simple things in life (that I overlooked or forgot to enjoy!)
For this image, your set up by picking up the butterfly and put it on the flowers makes me smile. Your post processing and your rotation work very well. Nice shot and well done!

Hi Quang,
The Percolator has rendered a nice effect to your Halloween wooden ornament. The app has generated different sizes of circles like the beer bubbles around your ornament and your background. One good thing that the bubbles did not overlap between the main subject and the background which made the skull stand out.
I wonder whether the app generates the bubbles based on your grey background or not? I saw some demos of the app generating different striking colors that are fun to watch. I'd suggest you to re-run the app to see If the colors are randomly selected each time or not.
I agree with Steven that the shadow could be avoided. It could be considered as the body of the skull if the shadow is evenly on both sides. It's a fun image for Halloween! |

Hi Gene,
The snow covered all tables and chairs on this narrow alley has a great impact to the scene. The vertical shot with the snow in blocks create a leading line that leads the viewers' eyes through the image. I like that the first two chairs were rotated slightly to the left that make them less static. The presence of the woman near the end also gives the scene a feeling of real life.
I'd prefer to sharpen the image a bit more to make the conversion to B&W stronger. Nice shot! |

Hi Steven,
Great catch! Your image did convey well your interpretation of the change of the season, with golden leaves on the branches and the fallen autumn leaves on the green lawn.
I also like your positive thinking in the way you describe the text as part of photography art, although the word "Change" might carry other political purposes, especially near the election day.
The text normally draws the viewers' eyes there but the brown & black colors of the steel bench works well in this scene. The angle you captured makes the whole scene very pleasing to see. I don't have any suggestion for improvement. |
