Well your post processing crop created a marvelously focused subject with terrific contrast. |

Helen, your title is interesting and even funny. That works in a certain way, I guess. However it is such a wonderful study in patterns, form, symmetry that I actually find the title distracting. As a minimalist study I rather just enjoy it and let my own creative mind determine what it is. As an image, it is absolutely splendid! |

Excellent, Stan! I can't fault or have a nit for anything about your image. It is wonderful. |

I suspect some will say it needs to have more contrast. For, me it is wonderful and grabs me with higher key approach. I see it as luminous and explosive with water and light. Very well done! |

My thoughts are parallel to Stan's review. While it is sharp, the tonal range I too starkly dark for my tastes. |

I Photograph for myself, too, seeking through these study groups and previous competitions ways of creating better images. The rules early on stifled, for me, some aspects of my artistic sense.

Stuart, while your edit is great, there is another issue. I am not an authority on all PSA exhibitions and judging criteria because I do not follow or pursue those programs. What, I believe and looked up, that Stan is referring to is the following rule for PTD Exhibitions: A Photo Travel image expresses the characteristic features or culture of a land as they are found naturally. There are no geographic limitations. Techniques that add, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. The only allowable adjustments are removal of dust or digital noise, restoration of the appearance of the original scene, and complete conversion to greyscale monochrome. Other derivations, including infrared, are not permitted. All images must look natural.

My Nikon D500 is a big DSLR that is perfectly balanced and matched to the 200-500mm NiKKOR f5.6 continuous aperture lens. I track the birds and will focus with back button focus depressed, auto ISO (of a very high sensitivity), 1/1600s (of a possible of 30s to 1/8000s) and set my aperture depending the light and background. The Nikon D500 makes RAW images in over 10 fps; JPEG is a little faster and the shot cycle time is under <0.26 sec with 27 frame buffer. I use this setting or a slightly higher shutter speed when I photography Osprey and Eagles and other birds fishing...it mostly about the ability to track the bird after locking on to it. Sometimes, it takes a few frames to lock on (always easier with a gimbal) but usually I hand hold the camera and the lens when on a boat. In the back yard so as not to spook the birds, I have shoot through a clean sunroom window. |
