Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
3 Mar 20 Comment Hi. I am visiting from Group 52 and 64.
Scenes like this are attractive to our eye when we travel, but there are challenges to presenting them in appealing ways. It perhaps works best as is in a photo essay. I have an image I did in Lisbon, Portugal that gets mixed reviews for similar reasons, but it works better because the viewer is drawn left to right up through the image focused on roof tops and colors of houses with a gradual climb up the hill. In this case my eye come right into the foreground houses on the left and then searches how to keep going through the scene and finds the road. I personally think, while I like the scene, those 4 or 5 story building in the bottom left quad of the image impede the view and then I am left to wonder around. Thus, I think scenes like this require a natural flow through the image with no abrupt bumps in the process. My only other comment, is the top rim seems a little dark and muddy. LuAnn's rendering helps that a lot.

20 Mar 20 Comment I don't typically care for these type of image, but it is very cool with wonderful color harmony. The radial blur that gradually evolves as my eye travels too the circumference edge is very appealing and well done. I think that is what makes this work me when other examples of this type of process don't. To put it simply my eye see and then travels around and then it all fades to the nice blur. Well done. 35 Mar 20 Comment Fun subject and your tonal control and composition is wonderful. The leaves are well done. Sometimes IR leaves aren't sharp enough. These are nicely presented. Mar 16th

36 Mar 20 Comment I like the composition in both color and monochrome and overall tonal choice. I see, though, what might be sensor dust and some structural artifacts with tonal blotches, light and dark, in some locations around the center of the image in monochrome as well as between elements of the drift wood. Additionally, the edges of the wood seems to have some radial artifacts. Mar 16th

39 Mar 20 Comment Well done, Jerry. It is a very nicely done composition with fine tonal consistency as well as pleasing separation from back ground to subject. Mar 16th

50 Mar 20 Comment Quite nice, Jeffery. I like both the color and the mono version. If I had any comment, it would be get a little more white on the breast if it can be done without loosing detail. Mar 16th

52 Mar 20 Comment Thanks for the comments.....Stay healthy, everyone. Mar 27th
52 Mar 20 Comment Lovely image, Mike. I didn't really notice the parallel lines until mentioned by others. You created a magnificent image with this crop and tonal adjustments. I definitely think the original image has possibilities for a wider view and that the trees make sense in that venue. Wonderful work...well done...well done! Mar 14th
52 Mar 20 Comment I like the image composition, color harmony, depth of field and overall sharpness. I am bothered, though that the whites are blow out and that you lost detail. That pulls my eye up to the top of the blossom when I would rather be within the bloom. Mar 14th
52 Mar 20 Comment I like the image for color, tone, depth of field and overall sharpness. I suspect the flash created a bit of a harsh splash of light that makes the color feature look a bit overly luminous with reflective light effect. Mar 14th
52 Mar 20 Comment Wonderful image, Pamela, I have no comment to add, since I think you controlled whites, exposure, sharpness and clarity very well and also you composed this well. Wonderful portrait. Mar 14th
52 Mar 20 Comment Lovely image, Sharon. You opened up the shadows nicely and toned the image well. I like the reflection and dynamism of the bird. As an alternative, I actually would like to see more of the V at the left side of the frame in the original in your final version and think it is a nice added touch option. Mar 14th
52 Mar 20 Comment Lisa, I like your image very much. It is very creative considering the original image it is based on is less appealing. You have used post processing techniques to a level that has allowed you to create a fine artistic image. I like the color pallet that is so harmoniously achieved and the exposure adjustments in you got in you post work.

I also like how you made the motions of the waves dynamic and luminous while sustaining a very nice softness. What a clever idea with the waves. I feel like I am at the waters edge and caught in a moment in time that is very pleasing to stay within. Print this on metal and hang it somewhere to behold and remind you of a wonderful day at the beach.

59 Mar 20 Comment I like both, but perhaps more to the Landscape for the blue framing effect. Wonderful story and well executed. Mar 16th

60 Mar 20 Reply Thanks, that clears up everything! Mar 17th
60 Mar 20 Comment I really like the effect and focus. I find the color transition from center to perimeter a bit odd, so I am left wondering what the source of that color variation is. You have definitely struck and interesting mode with the tonality you chose. Mar 16th

64 Mar 20 Comment Thanks for the comments, everyone. Stay healthy! Mar 27th
64 Mar 20 Reply Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Your comments are very valid. Perhaps, it depends on the light and the definition of "lot" work on the out of the camera image. While I still do 75% percent of my monochrome work based on the RAW image and suitable software, I have been surprised with film simulation in camera often enough to pursue it when I think it works. For me, it adds another option to the fun of creative process. Mar 17th
64 Mar 20 Comment Excellent portrait! I like everything about it. Mar 9th
64 Mar 20 Reply Exactly...that is my choice when I choose jpeg in camera. In both my Nikon Z6 and my Fuji X Series cameras, I have "numerous" black & white choices and even other creative options using alternative monochrome and variations of color that often simulate quite nicely old film types. The Fuji actually calls the jpeg picture controls "film simulation". Shooting both in RAW and Jpeg this way allows one to discover possibilities that might work very nicely right out of the camera as well as suggest a way to process the RAW image and even do both! The "possibilities" are limitless when coupled with quality post process software when needed. Mar 8th
64 Mar 20 Reply Images are not solely about medals and awards. What of a regional photo essay, or photo book, or exhibit that includes well presented images that are on their own or as a group images that matter to some folks?

Regarding, in camera Monochrome, I argue that depending on the camera's attributes, it might offer surprising and pleasing results. I do it a lot now after only processing the mono look from RAW for several years for a long time because it can offer great results and enhance the experience of seeing in B&W at the capture time.

Many years ago I took a workshop where we started with in camera B&W in order to practice seeing.

64 Mar 20 Reply And, if interested, there are presets available that offer starting points for further creative options. Mar 7th
64 Mar 20 Comment Stan, That is a wonderful explanation of how you created your image. It is a good example of how we learn from one another on how they create an image from start to finish. I think you did a nice job with the capture and the processing. The global and selective tonal range is very good. It is sharp and clear with nice contrast.

In my opinion, the image lacks something which might have been better achieved at a different angle of view to achieve a slightly different composition. I find the right frame encroaching on the bag and on the potted plant a bit tight. On the left the item on the pavement (cloth bag perhaps) grabs my eye a little more than I think it should.

Again, you have showed and explained how Lightroom can be used as an alternative for B&W processing quite nicely.

64 Mar 20 Comment Jerry, your conversion to black and white is excellent in tonality. I agree the subject is very interesting with lots of textures and patterns that make it perfect for mono effect. In my opinion, I find the wires distracting and thus diminishing the scene of the window. Mar 6th
64 Mar 20 Comment Stuart, you have done a wonderful job on Monochrome to enhance your original image, I think, which wasn't as compelling and sharp. Composition is great and the story is excellent. Tonality is very good. I like your processing a lot. Well done. Mar 6th
64 Mar 20 Comment This an interesting and I like it. In my opinion it is well composed and tells a fine story visually of life, activities and thins to see on those converging waterways. That is the subject for me. The monochrome tonality is very nice with pleasing range, clarity, detail and contrast. If you are pleased with traveling this way and get these type of results go for it. Mar 6th
64 Mar 20 Comment Don, composition works for the most part for. It is an interesting travel capture more as a snap shot of something seen along the way. In my opinion the resolution is not pleasing and the amount of black tones I find over done. It might work better if there was less to see them as much as I see in the frame. Seeing the tail end of the car on the left, and perhaps even the street light doesn't add anything to the image. The tree on the right is also distracting. Even at f/5.6, I see a lot of background elements that distract me from focusing on the Totem Pole. Mar 6th

72 Mar 20 Comment Nice image and story. I think some de-noise will enhance the image such as Stuart suggests. Mar 16th
72 Mar 20 Comment Beautiful image, Mary. I like the layers and patterns of interest as my eye travels through the scene. Your exposure is wonderful as is the overall color harmony. Lovely image.

BTW, I was tickled to run across your name among PSA DD Groups. You might remember me on the Road Scholar Photo Trip in Summer 2015 that you led in Pingree Valley, Colorado. I still remember the wonderful climb up to 10,000 ft to see Cirque Meadow followed by the deluge of rain that was visited on us on the trip back down to the CSU mountain campus. Thanks again for a wonderful trip.

80 Mar 20 Comment Your monochrome tonal effect as well as composition leads me through the image and allows me to wonder and create a story. Often an image doesn't need to have a clear story, but only suggest and then we discover from there, possibilities and some wonderment. You framed this well to help me see. Mar 16th
