I appreciate the input from all of you; I do like the ethereal look but I think if I were to do it again, I'd try to capture just a little bit more sharpness in the outer edges of the flower. I kept the DOF down for creating the bokeh effect and was happy with that and the detail in the center of the lily. But I do agree with the sharpness issue...unfortunately, I don't think I would have had the same success with the background if I did different settings, but who knows? I don't think I want to recreate the covid days to find out, lol. |

The initial impact for me came from the colors; the lighting brought out some beautiful reds which I find are often hard to get right. However, beyond that, I can't determine what the subject was, as there is too much out of focus. I can imagine how difficult it must have been to photograph something the size of an ant, but I can't detect where the water drop begins or ends, or any separation between the petals. I think only the color works in this image, so I would attack the subject from a different direction? |

Wow, it almost feels like it has an anime treatment!! I love the detail! Actually, as a viewer, I really enjoyed this very different macro of the face of a hoverfly. The light areas are what gives it that anime look, but that doesn't mean it wasn't sharp from my perspective. I looked at it twice to make sure. Okay, I don't know what a judge would say, but I can tell you that it would go over very well as an art piece on someone's wall. And I also want to say WELCOME! |

The lighting on your flower picks up the detail while creating a beautiful softness on the petals. I am a bit disturbed by the points of some petals cut off at the bottom, since you didn't do this uniformly around the flower. Your background has the right amount of softness for me while still providing a good contrast to make your flower stand out. I think this is a good capture and hope you have a version where the entire flower is captured? |

Who doesn't love those little Skippers? And you used color to your advantage with the strong yellows and purples of the image. I actually don't think I would change anything. The amount of detail in your capture feels great to me, and the lighting provides depth while not creating any deep shadows or blown out highlights. I found your use of leading lines to also work well for bringing my eye into where it needs to go, along with the placement of the main subject...it also works well here so that my eye as a viewer went right to the Skipper. Good capture of his detail and coloring. |

Well done, Stuart! Great capture of two interesting and cohesive subjects that intersected nicely together. The diagonal placement works great and shows your dragonfly to advantage, while the soft background of the white is dark enough to not distract but light enough to add nice contrast to the blues of your dragonfly. Great job on this one! |

Very interesting in its cropped version! The colors are very pleasing together, and the lighting is interesting and adds depth. For me, there is still too much that is out of focus, even for an abstract. My own personal preference was for the original image, maybe cropped to a 1x1? It's not exactly a macro, so I wonder if this could have been a good candidate for an ICM treatment? |

Your capture of the flower is technically well done...it's sharp with a good DOF, has nice white balance, and great contrast against the background. There is something that doesn't work from me, but I wasn't able to put my finger right on it. The background is soft but still has some strong white lines showing just enough to detract from the flower itself, and the flower is too little of a subject within the crop for my personal taste. I see that some comments are that the flower is "floating" and I have been guilty of that as well. I think when you find a subject like this one, maybe try multiple perspectives to see if one of them works better than the rest? |
