95 Jul 25 Reply I agree...the leaf is too out of focus. This may be one that was fun to try but just a throwaway in the end. It happens, lol!! Jul 21st
95 Jul 25 Comment Really nice shot--wonderful sharpness and detail. I do get what Margaret is saying--the best part is the center pods. With the stems, it is busy without the stems adding anything to the overall image. I think her comment was "I might try to crop down..." darn that auto-correct!! Anyway, you could do many things to minimize the background elements if you wanted to. I am all about honoring what the intent of the photographer was--and you may want those back elements. In that case, focus stacking, perhaps? For me as a viewer, if you could just fix that background, I think your flower itself (or pods) are really great, and very, very interesting, with a great combination of red and green! Jul 10th
95 Jul 25 Comment Okay, since both of you asked about the leaf, I saw a presentation by Mike Moats where he talked about a regular old flower image, vs. one that was interesting because of a pose, a leaf position, etc. I loved this because of the leaf--it looks like a human with their hand by the side of their mouth, whispering sotto voce with a secret. Perhaps my title didn't really work. You know, Oh My! as in "what a reveal!" I do think I could perhaps have gotten the leaf sharper, but then it would have equal weight with the flower head itself, which is not what I wanted. The flower head should still have greater weight than the "arm" (the leaf). Jul 10th
95 Jul 25 Comment I'm loving this...it's a great, very artistic image. I don't understand that lens info...is it a macro lens? It would be really helpful to have more information about the How's for us so we all learn from each other. I do agree with Stuart about the lens reflection right in the center...it was the first thing I noticed. I have seen them replaced with another image; not saying you should do this, but it may need something, even if it is just darkening it down so it doesn't pull my eyes as a viewer right to it. With the horizontal lines, it unnecessarily detracted from an otherwise beautiful image. Jul 10th
95 Jul 25 Comment You know I have a fondness for those ethereal looking flower images, and you have really nailed the look. The background works great, the edges are softly vignetted but without too much vignette. There is fantastic sharpness on a flower that would be so hard to get without focus stacking, so well done! There are a couple of areas that are dark green, contrasting against the lightness of the pistils, but those are easily fixed with careful cloning. I once heard a speaker say she actually removed the more troubling ones--sometimes physically (ouch, I hate to see that), and sometimes cloning them out in post. Jul 10th
95 Jul 25 Comment This is a very cool photo...and the muted tones works so well for the subject matter!!
That background is fantastic. Well done!! I did see what Margaret was saying about the head of the fly when I enlarged the image, but not to any troubling degree. After denoising, did you sharpen a bit? The denoising always make stuff a teeny bit soft. Or you could put more contrast onto your fly which would make it stand out more while looking sharper. What a great image!!

95 Jul 25 Comment You've really done a great job with this Siberian Iris, with color balance perfect, great sharpness, it stands out well from the background. I think the only suggestion I would make is to work on the lower right side on the background. There's a big, distracting spot of white, and then a big, high-contrast spot of dark. The rest of your background is so blurred and pretty--can you patch or clone from the other three background areas? I would also like to know, like Cheryl, about the extension tubes. I have always found the DOF to be so, so narrow! The use of the 70-200 was a great choice--not sure about using an extension tube. Jul 10th
95 Jul 25 Comment This is a great image...it's sharp, great clarity/definition against the background, and I think the color works very well for nice impact against the black background! Jul 10th
