95 May 25 Comment How interesting that this was a bracketed picture--there are a couple areas on the feather that look out-of-focus. However, I really love your sharp capture of that plant! Its fly-out stems parallel the wispy area of the feathers to great effect. I also feel the brown tonality works very well, as does the lighting. If I enlarge it, there is a hair on the feather, but that happens so easily on these macros; could it be spot removed out? So here's one question I have: was the original wider? I don't know what those plants are called but they are really enchanting, so I personally might give it extra weight against the feather? My other observation is that the orientation of the feather is horizontal, and the parallel stems are horizontal, so the vertical crop hems it in for me. Again, these comments are just my personal input and observations, not how you or anyone else might feel. May 15th
95 May 25 Reply That small point is actually a part of the flower. Ideally, I would have loved to have more in focus, but I wanted the capture of a rare flower and honestly didn't have the ability to get down any lower or hold it any steadier...believe me, I was there for some time looking at it. The ground was wet and muddy, the light was nearly non-existent, but I couldn't pass it by, lol!! May 15th
95 May 25 Comment Wow, to capture it this sharply with hand-holding and at 1/125? Kudos to you. I like what you've captured as far as the focus. I think more light on the subject could have been easily achieved by raising the ISO...truly there is no reason not to on the newer cameras and with better and better options for denoising in post. And if you raised the f stop? Even more compensation needed from the ISO because you had no room with the shutter speed. Hand-holding, you cannot fall below your shutter speed; it's a rule you don't hear much about. The other thing I would personally like to see is less of the negative white space--it feels harsh against the dark foreground and subject. While getting rid of some of that, you could shear off some of the left side to eliminate that out-of-focus brown foreground while still leaving plenty of space in front of your ladybug. May 15th
95 May 25 Comment John, with a 2.8 lens, you might have opened up the aperture a bit...f13 was probably intended to capture the maximum possible depth, but I would suggest you raise the ISO, too. There isn't enough light, but I think if there was, it would be a nice image. The composition is also something to play around with. We don't know from your details whether you cropped it or could only capture this much of the flower? I think I would either crop in more or try to go out a bit, particularly on the bottom--that is the best part of this flower, but it was cut off at nearly its tip. May 15th
95 May 25 Comment An interesting macro, and your execution of it is really done nicely! Very sharp with a great texture and details. I love the colors and background. What was up with the lighting? Along with Stuart, it looks dark overall--not the capture itself, but the entire image. I would bring the global exposure up on the subject, leaving the background as is, and then brush in any local darkness or shadows you need. This image is worth investing the extra time in. May 15th
95 May 25 Comment Gloria, I think you've done a wonderful job on this. The crop works very well and the background is both soft and complimentary to your image. The pink is a little bright as pinks and reds tend to do, so you could tone it down if you felt like it, but what a great image!! The butterfly is beautifully captured!

95 May 25 Comment Well done!! I, too, bought a UV Flashlight after watching a webinar for Platypus by Rain, Rainey? Anyway, I have only tried it a couple of times, so you've inspired me to get back to it. I love the colors and the way it floats against the background but still retains edge definition. To me, this is great just as is. I'm not always crazy about square vignettes, so I would urge you to try a regular and slightly lighter vignette just to compare. It is beautifully done, though, Margaret!! May 15th
