You are right about the flower but it was on the same plane as the bee, so I could only soft focus parts of it, not the center where the bee sat. I think it could, however, be attempted in post. Not sure it is worthy of that much processing.
Bees on flowers are plentiful right now, so back to the camera! |

Keith, I often have the same problem. Yes, early morning or late afternoon, but a diffuser or using your own body when all else fails. |

Nice sharp capture! I liked your original crop for balance.
One observation I have is that sharp shadow lines are something to be avoided in macro, and it can be done easily with a diffuser between your light source and the subject. Now, I say "easily" but, in truth, unless we had 4 arms, it is annoying and clumsy. Try a Plamp to hold it. Or a friend (we usually have run off all our normal friends from our photography obsession...). Or clip it onto your camera or tripod somehow. That is where the Plamp line comes in handy. Or insert your body in such a way to throw some even shade on the flower and then light it another way if necessary. But, your capture is so nice and the contrast between flower and background is beautiful. |

It is good that you try these techniques...nobody gets it right the first time, and for some of us, we don't get it right the first 100 times, lol. It introduced some artifacts, and if you go through your stack, sometimes you can eliminate the offending image. But Stuart has given you a nice, detailed methodology!

I really like your capture and the crop. Can you bring out more detail on the caterpillar's face? That feels like the main subject to me, but he is lost in shadow on his little face. I guess you have already been told that the original doesn't seem to match the final...happens to us all!!! There has to be a better way to organize files... |

Thank you for the input...I worked on those changes, but in the end, I found that there just was too much pattern in the flower. Ahhh, back to the drawing board! Next time, a darker, less-patterned flower. This is why these dialogues are so helpful!! |
