This is an absolutely stunning image, Keith! The contrast, the clarity of your subject, and the way it sits against the background work together very nicely. The blurred petal tips on the lower half are the only distracting or uncomfortable element for me. Not sure why you blurred them or if it was because of the camera being handheld when you photographed them. This is particularly great considering that it WAS handheld! So, one thing that would eliminate it from any nature competition but might work is to clone a similar tip from above, in Photoshop, and use the Transform tool to rotate and size it into place over a blurred tip? I have seen people use liquify to "stretch" the tips into a flowing look, but sometimes it works and sometimes...not. Kudos though for a beautiful image! |

I'm afraid to ask. Concrete, yes, but I think it is something more ... personal? To an animal perhaps? Great clarity, texture and lighting. Nicely done with a Smartphone and Macro Lens. It works as an abstract. I have to admit that I wouldn't necessarily hang it on my own wall just because I wonder what those two light areas are, and they remind me of maggots, so.... Crime Scene image? |

The clarity is so good, with the stem just a bit blurry. You've captured amazing texture in the weed itself. I think I personally might have preferred the stem to be as sharp as the flower so that the flower isn't floating. To me, it looks like a wabi-sabi; check out Lisa Cuchara...I believe she and partner Tom are members of PSA and she did a wonderful presentation on Wabi-Sabi in photography. You seem to have nailed the focus-stacking, so I'm curious why with 137 images, that stem isn't in focus. Anyway, the colors work well together; I like the blue background. I really think just bringing that greenery behind into focus would benefit the image greatly. |

To my eye, this is perfect as is. While sometimes specular highlights can be problematic, they look like little starbursts to me, so here they work fine. When I really have to get rid of those tiny ones, I just clone them out. The colors work well together, and although I do see that some of the little bulbs aren't sharp in front, that can be easily cured by using a DOF of maybe f8 or f11 and focusing nearer to the front of all the bulbs. You will maintain your overall quality by staying right in the center there at f11, and possibly even a bit higher if necessary. Or focus stack, but ??? you have to decide. For me, the abstractness of it while still knowing it is floral is of great interest. |

Great capture for clarity of the essential part, the center. I have a couple of suggestions as to my eye, it looks very blue-toned; even the whites of the flower look too blue to me. I would try lightening it as Stuart suggested, but also work on the white balance. I also agree with Gloria that the grass blades can be a bit distracting, but I don't mind the one through the petal. Just goes to show--different viewers, different opinions. For me, the crop really works well for your subject. |
