Now here's something interesting: without that "distraction," I noticed the upper right corner does not match the rest of the background. I know it would be a pain in the butt, but if you ever feel like it, try cloning some of that purple background over the dark grey of that upper right corner. You really only notice it when you step back from the image like in these small thumbnails. |

I was in some very awkward positions for this!! He was in a small space, low to the ground. |

Yes, Tom, your softening of that hard edge improved the image. I was afraid if I did that it would look like my critter was hovering in the air, but it looks good where you did it. |

Yes, I see those now, and I also see a weird reddish tint in a number of places. Back to the drawing board! Thank you for your input! |

Your stacking is really getting everything in sharp focus throughout! And your lighting feels very nice--even but not flat. Good white balance and clarity on the plants. The crop feels appropriate, and I see you are lined up on the right top edge of the pot itself; for some reason, it still feels slightly tilted to me. That is an easy fix in post, but just moving the whole picture won't work as well as a perspective fix, in my opinion. My only other suggestion is the yellow--it feels too saturated of a yellow to me, overpowering your subject. You can select the subject or the background in Lightroom and play with the hue, luminosity and saturation to find a more pleasing background that lets your image stand out as the main subject. Your subject is really well done! |

Your subjects are always so fascinating and unusual. I like the texture and the gentle feeling of undulating surface that you've captured. The tonal range also works quite well for this. There are a couple of "soft" areas, but not so obvious that it detracts from the image for me. The crop didn't work as well for me, and I was wondering if you considered a diagonal placement of this subject? I like the image, though. The white balance feels spot-on. |

Stuart, first let me say congrats on your image in the Showcase! Great job!
This image you've submitted appeals to me deeply--the color combination alone is stunning, but add to it your clarity of capture, the beautiful ed edges that stand out from the rest of the leaves, the sculpting of the lighting and your soft background--it all adds up to a great image to me! There is one very small artifact in the upper left quadrant at the tip of one leaf which can easily be cloned out, but I wouldn't remove those secondary leaves, IMHO. They work well for this image. |
